Smoke Signals December 1992 Page 5 Grand Ronde Royalty The Grand Ronde Royalty Court represents the Grand Ronde Tribe at pow-wows, parades, youth functions, tribal gatherings, and celebrations. Being a member of the Royalty Court allow you to learn more about your traditions as well as traditions of other tribes. You would have the opportunity to make new friends, meet people, and travel to different places. It can be a lot of fun and a really great experience to grow from. AND SR MISS GRAND RONDE You must have your own regalia for all events. It is not the responsibility ofthe committee, the Tribal Council, or any other program to provide for these things in any way. These are not paid positions. The two Queens will be reimbursed milage only for all required events. 1. Must be single, childless, and never married. If you become pregnant, you immediately forfeit any title, prizes, or crown. 2. Must be an enrolled member ofthe Confederated Tribes ofthe Grand Ronde Community of Oregon. 3. Junior Court age category: must be 1 1-14 years of age. 4. Senior Court age category: must be 15-19 years of age. 5. If school age, must be attending school. 6. All contestants are expected by their conduct, to represent the Tribe, their family, and themselves with integrity and a gracious spirit at all times. 7. Must attend all required events (pow-wow, parades, fundraisers, organizational meetings) unless absence is prearranged with the committee. 8. Must be drug and alcohol free. Any misconduct with drugs or alcohol will result in the immediate disqualification from the court and you will not be allowed to enter again. 9. Must be willing to speak in front of large groups of people. 10. You must be fully dedicated a prepared to represent the Tribe in a posetive way. 1 1. Must show good judgement by not participating in any activities that would bring adverse publicity to yourself or the Tribe while you are a member of Royalty Court. 12. Must be willing to dance. (If you don't know how, you will be expected to attend dance classes offered by the Tribe.) 13. You need to make at least one article of your regalia. 14. Failure to meet any ofthe above requirements may result in the immediate disqualification from the Royalty Court. 15. There may be other requirements not mentioned at this time. Forming and writing of personnel, procurement, accounting and other policies for the corporation. Person must have good business development and management skills as well as good communication and people skills. TITLE: Grants Developer SALARY: $32,000-842,000 CLOSING DATE: December 18, 1992 REPORTS TO: Executive Officer RESPONSIBILITIES: The Grants Developer is a grantwriter to provide the Tribe with specialized technical support and professional expertise in the development, initial implementation, and monitoring of community development plans and activities. Specifically, the Grants Developer will be responsible for the analysisof community needs and services and the subsequent identification of applicable funding resourses to meet those needs. As a primary responsiblitity the Grants developer will initiate and complete the preparation and submission of grant and programfunding proposals and applications to meet identified community developemnt needs. DUTIES: Develops and maintains a data base for the collection, retrieval, and analysis of community development projects and activities. Prepares grant and program proposals and applications for funding from appropriate agencies to promote the social, health, economic, and physical development ofthe Tribe. Interacts with program managers, staff, governmental agencies, and other appropriate individuals for the purpose of developing and monitoring community development projects. Develops charts, graphs, maps, and assessment instruments to depict existing and potential tribal development projects. Contuinually update community development plans and identify local, state, Federal, and private resourses for tribal development purposes. Maintains a system for tracking budget expenditures, reporting deadlines and project implementation schedules. Prepares all necessary reports for appropriate grants and contracts administered by the Tribe. Performs other related dutuies as assigned by appropriate supervisor. QUALIFICATIONS B.A. in Planning, Public or Business Administration, or similar field, OR combination or equivilant education and employment experience. (Experience must be Tribal planning or related field.) Knowledge of Federal rules and regulation applicable to program funding source. Demonstrated technical ability to write plans, proposals, and success in submission of same. TribalIndian preference applies. Grand Ronde, Oregon 97347 Elder's Spotlight: Dorothy Greene By Tracy Olson Dorothy Greene has so many stories and tales about her life and Grand Ronde history, that after our conversation I suggested to her that she write a book about her life. "There are a lot of things I want to do,'' she answered. "A lot of things I want to help the Tribe with." Dorothy, was born in Oregon and although lived in many cities, she was raised in Grand Ronde. She graduated eighth grade from Cloverleaf Grade School. "I still remember Eula Petite handing me my diploma," she said. She then went on the graduate from Chemawa Indian School in 1 940. ' " ' I MW. "' I I ill t 1 Ly F I C ! &3 Dorothy Greene from her days on Tribal Council She describes her mother as a beautiful woman with blonde hair and grey eyes who moved to Dayton, Oregon from the mid-west in the early 1900s. She visited Grand Ronde frequently, and it was there she met Alexander Gus LaBonte, Dorothy's father. They married, had Dorothy, continued on page 6
