'if 1 s v .--J Tribal Judge Les Marston swears in the new Tribal Council members: Ed Larsen, Kathryn Harrison, and Andrew Jenness. New Council Members Selected and Sworn In The People have spoken: newly elected Tribal Council members are Kathryn Harrison, Ed Larsen, and Andrew Jenness. The election was held September 12 at the tribal offices. Although only about 20 percent of the eligable voters participated in the election, people mailed in their absentee ballots as well as came to Grand Ronde to vote in person. Wednesday, September 16, the new council members were sworn in by Tribal Judge Les Marston, and were present at the General Council meeting on September 20. Issues that were addressed at the meeting included fundraisers for the Pow-wow Committee, funding for funeral services, health care, and the recent discovery of remains located near Albany. These remains were the focus of discussion between tribal members and Tribal Council concerning their future protection, examination, and final resting place. Tribal Council suggesting checking out the policies of other Oregon tribes before making a permanent decision on the situation. Although some tribal members expressed disappointment at the desision to keep the discovery of these remains under wraps. Chairman Mark Mercier said it was a safeguard against word leaking out to pothunters of their location. Community Encourager's Report By Mike Larsen The Community Health Council met on September 24 to go over the final draft of their recommendations concerning health care services in the new health clinic. After additions and corrections are made, they will be presented to the Tribal Council. I feel the Community Health Council did a real good job on this project. I have really enjoyed working on this with fellow tribal members. This has been a team effort and I am glad I was a part of it. I think the tribal members who took part in it learned a lot about themselves and developed some skills they will be able to use in other areas. My heartfelt thanks to the Community Health Council. Thank you. 4 I if', Northwest Indian Veteran's Association Report All veterans are invited to the Grand Ronde NIVA chapter spaghetti feed on October 16, 1992 in the Community Service Center. The dinner will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. We would like to see any tribal or non-tribal veterans in our community attend. We're trying to find out some of the needs of our veterans and also make them aware of our organization. Please let us know if there is anything we can help you with concerning veteran's benefits.
