Fun continues with Family Math and Science
If you have not attended a Family Math and Science class lately, you have missed out on fun! The
Tribal Education Program, the Johnson O'Malley staff, and parent volunteers have worked together to
prepare math and science games for children at the kindergarten to eight grade levels.
The Family Math and Science class held March 24 at the Tribal Community Center challenged chil
dren to make a "balloon rocket." Children were then put to task by determining if they could make a
balloon taped to a drinking straw shoot along a piece of string for more than 20 feet. After trying differ
ent approaches to factors such as height, weight, and tension, some of the children and parents were
able to successfully shoot their balloon rocket 30 to 40 feet.
This activity dealt in experimenting with aerodynamics, projecting, estimating, resistance, problem
solving and designing a model. The children and parents were not only conducting scientific experi
ments, they were having a great tim e too.
Make plans to attend the next Family Math and Science class on April 21, 1992. All classes are held
from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Tribal Community Center. Come join the fun.
