Smoke Signals July 1991 Community News JJ JJL COUNCIL (Veterans continued from page 1) MEMBER SUSPENDED Council member Larry Brandon was suspended for three months by Council peers on June 19, 1991 as a result of a review of a complaint filed by a tribal member. During the June 12, 1991 Tribal Council meeting, tribal member olleen Kimsey filed a formal complaint to the Council regarding a "rude and vulgar" statement made by Brandon in a public establishment. In presenting her complain, Kimsey, provided a witness to the incident. Following guidelines under a recently adopted Tribal Gov ernment Ordinance, the Council allowed Brandon one week to present any witnesses to the complaint and tabled the matter until the June 19th meeting. At the June 19th meeting, Brandon presented two written statements from witnesses present during the incident. Following a recess to review the issue, the Council recon vened with a Tribal resolution declaring their findings on the complaint. The resolution declared that "based on evidence presented that Council member Larry Brandon made a vulgar personal attack on another member of the Tribe in a public establishment", in violation of tribal code, and "that Tribal Council member Larry Brandon shall be suspended from serving on the Tribal Council and partici pating in all related Governmental activities for three (3) months effective immediately." The motion passed 5 yes, 0 no and 1 abstention. Following the findings of the Council, Brandon apologized to Colleen and her family for his actions. for Native American Veterans. The council is made up of service providers from Washington, Oregon and Idaho who have agreed to come together to develop solutions to concerns of Northwest area veterans.
