Smoke Signals 'October' 1990 page 13 EDUCATION Educational Update By Dean Azule This years fall term 1990, began on a very positive note. On September 7th, 1990, the Education Program witnessed three additional graduates to the FY "90 year. Ms. Marion Payne, Ms. Tamara Williams, and Ms. Melanie Smith, each completed their programs and Certificates of Completion, State Licenses, and Bachelor of Science Degree. All three were recognized for their accomplishments. With the graduation of these three students, the Education Program has realized a total of 24 Adult Vocational Training graduates, and 7 Higher Education graduates. These completions have occurred all within the last 4 years. Now that fall term is underway, we look forward to a very positive and productive 1990-1991 school year. Many new and continued avenues have been established with college and university support programs and personnel. Our application list for both the AVT and Higher Education Programs are full and we anticipate having a full roster of students per the 1990-1991 academic year. As we've asked in the past, let's all show our support and encouragement for all our students. They need to hear that we are aware of all their hard work! New Addition to the 1990 - 1991 Year Since October 1st, the Education Program has enrolled one new student to the AVT Program for the 1990-91 academic year. Ms. Tannctte Boerckcl, has enrolled in the International Air Academy and will pursue a ReservationsTicket Agent Program. Ms. Boerckel is a 1989 High School graduate from Wilson High School in Portland. She is the daughter of Mrs. Terry Boerckel also of Portland. Congratulations on your admission into the International Air Academy, Tannctte ! Math & Science Reminder! The Tribal JOM & Education Programs will be sponsoring Family Math & Family Science activities on October 23rd, 1990 in the Grand Rondc Elementary School. The class is open to EVERYONE and ANY ONE who wants to learn to make Math and Science FUN! Dinner will be provided, so come and enjoy the fun! The activity is not for children only, parents are especially urged to participate. Workshop will be conducted from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. See you at Family Math & Family Science class! High School Students & Interested Individuals On November 9th, 1990, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Tribal Higher Education & Adult Vocational Training Programs will be sponsoring a workshop to assist students in applying for community college, or university programs for the 1991-1992 academic year. Representa tives from Chemeketa Community College, Eastern Oregon State College, Oregon State University, and the University of Oregon will be on hand to discuss the following: - Getting Into College - Financing a College Education - What High School Students Should do to Prepare for College - Labor Trends, Where Will the Jobs be in the 90's? - Choosing a Major - Determining if College is for You Parents are also invited to attend this workshop. Students wishing to attend, should contact Camille or myself for arrangements to have you excused from classes for the day. Lunch or Brunch will be provided. The workshop is not for 4 year degree programs only. If you are thinking about pursuing a Vocational Training Program, please plan on attending. Many of the vocational training institutions also follow similar admission and financial aid guidelines. Upcoming Conferences October 13th - 17th "22nd Annual National Indian Education Association Conference" will be held at the Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center in San Diego, California. The title of the conference is "Put ting Indian Education to Work...The Effective Connec tion." November 8th - 11th "The People Come First" is the title of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society National Conference, which will be held in Buffalo, New York, at the Buffalo Convention Center. Melanie Smith SCHOOL: Trend College of Business PROGRAM: Professional Office Administration DEGREE: Diploma of Completion GPA: 3.00 Accumulative When asked why she chose the Professional Office Administration Program instead of another, Melanie replied, "I graduated from high school and had not made up my mind as to what I wanted to do, so I decided to take a program that I could complete in a (Continued on page 14.) Marion (Mercier) Payne SCHOOL: Western Oregon State College MAJOR: Corrections DEGREE: Bachelor of Science (WOSC) Minor: Psychology Associates of Science (CCC), Criminal Justice HONORS: Deans List and Honor Roll (WOSC, CCC) Scholarship: Oregon Couniy Sheriffs Association G.PA: 3.50 Accumulative At the conclusion of summer term 1990, Ms. Marion Payne became the Tribe's seventh Higher Education graduate within the last 5 years. Marion's educational path was varied and included several turns along the way. In retrospect, Marion never lost sight of the importance of an education. She demonstrated this by her past involvement with the Title IV & JOM Educa tion Programs as a Parent Committee member and Program staff. Initially Marion enrolled in Chemeketa Community College in pursuit of a Criminal Justice Associates . degree. While attending CCC. she encountered positive academic success by maintaining a 3.65 Grand Point Average. She was placed on the Dean's List (3.50 GPA or better) SJX times. She received a $500.00 Scholarship, for her academic achievement from the Oregon County Sheriffs Association. Because of her success, Marion decided to continue her education and change the Tribe's Adult Vocational Training Program, and pursue a 4 year degree. Her hard work did not cease upon enrollment into the Tribal Higher Education Program. Her experience at W.O.S.C. earned her Honor Roll distinction twice with a straight "A" 4.00 GPA; and Dean's Kust honors with a 3.50 or better GPA Marion completed her studies with a total accumulative GPA of 3.60 Marion is the daughter of the late Marion David Mercier, and Rose (Reznicsek) and Roger Birt. Currently, Marion is working with the Tribe's Social Service Department. She has expressed relief that her studies have concluded and she feels that she can make a positive contribution to the Tribe. Marion, on behalf of the Tribe's Education Program and Education Committee, you have our heartiest congratulations on a job well done! V.
