Smoke Signals January 1990 Page 3 OREGONTAN PTIRT JSHINfl COMPANY OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS High School students (SENIORS) who arc considering going to school next year (Fall "90, be aware the ORE GONIAN Publishing Company, is awarding scholarships to students who qualify. The Company provides these scholarships through a $2 million gift from the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation. Individual grants are awarded on the basis of need and merit and may be as high as $10,000 per academic year. Scholarships can be contin ued up to as long as 4 years, on the basis that you maintain a 2.00 Grade Point Average and complete 45 credit hours per academic year. The Scholarships can be used at any two or four year, public or private accred ited institution, college or university, within the United States. TO QUALIFY. YOU MUST: 1. Be a graduating senior from a high school in Oregon or Clark County, Washington. 2. Have a grade point average of at least a 3.00 GPA based on your sophomore year through the first semes ter of your senior year. 3. Plan to enroll full time at any two or four year, public or private accredited institution in the U.S. 4. Have completed 14 Carnegie units (year long study of one subject) during high school. 5. Need financial assistance. If you fall short of one of the stipulations, be aware that SPECIAL CONSIDERATION is given to students: who are affected by a history of cultural, social and economic inequalities. - who have ever resided in a single parent family andor - whose parents did not complete high school. In addition, the evaluations will consider: - academic potential - achievements - skills - community contributions. If you are an American Indian or Alaskan Native, Hispanic or African American Student, you may qualify for one of the 146 renewable scholarships worth $1,750 each academic year. The scholarships will be granted to selected students from the above mentioned ethnic groups who will enroll in one of the Oregon four year public colleges or universi ties as freshman during 1990-91. The scholarships are based on Leadership and Academics. To be considered you must: , - be a U.S. citizen - an Oregon resident - a graduate of an Oregon high school or GED certifi cate recipient (GED applicants must provide and official copy of GED scores) - able to meet freshman admission requirements at the college or university where a student plans to enroll. - committed to the pursuit of a bachelor's degree; - a member of one of these ethnic groups, American IndianAlaskan Native; Hispanic American or African American, (proof may be required.) Selection of applicants is based on these areas: - coursework undertaken during high school - high school grade point average - SATACT scores - qualify of personal statement, and, - community service, leadership, or other related activities. Application deadline for filing for the Minority Achieve ment Scholarship Program is MARCH 1, 1990. You can obtain an application for this scholarship from your local high school counseling office or by writing to the Admissions Office at: Western Oregon State College, Eastern Oregon State College, University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Oregon Institute of Technol ogy, Oregon Health Sciences University Southern Oregon State College and Portland State University.
