AARON GRADUATES FROM WILLAMINA Trevor Aaron graduated from Willamina High School in June. His parents are Darlene and Roger Aaron. Now that High School is over, Trevor says he will attend Western Oregon State College this fall. He said he is "unsure" what he will pursue as a major right now but is very interested in architecture or being a sports doctor and he might even try his hand at veterinary medicine. As you can see, Trevor is keeping himself busy just trying to decide what to major in. While in High School Trevor participated in Football and Wrestling. He was a defensive tackle in Football and he said that he enjoyed his experience on the gridiron and he especially enjoyed being part of a team. "The best part was learning the game and having fun . with my friends." Trevor says that the biggest thing he will miss about High School is being with family and friends because I won't see much of them when I attend College and I'll miss them alot. When asked what his heritage means to him, Trevor looked very proud and says, "It means having an oppor tunity to succeed. Being a Native American has helped me achieve College opportunities to better myself and that means alot to me," he said. Trevor said when (not in near future) he has children he would like to make sure that they learn about their heritage and what it means to be an Native American because he feels that children are not learning enough about their cultural backgrounds in today's schools. "Becoming knowledgable about your background is very important, " explained Trevor. "I would like to take this time to thank my parents and everybody who has helped me get to where I am today." High School, Eric Jordan of Lakeridge High School, John LaBonte of Chemawa High School, Dana Leno of Roseburg High School, Danett Pierce of Chemawa High School, Julie Thomas of South Salem High School, Luntia Renfrow of Jefferson High School and Jackie Grant who graduated from Eastern Oregon State College. Congratulations to all of you!! SHONN AND DUSTIN LENO WRESTING UPDATE Shonn and Dustin Leno recently returned from Gillette, Wyoming where they competed in the Western National Wrestling Tournament. The wrestling duo competed against the best in the west and found out that they had the ability to compete on the National Level. Shonn competed in both the freestyle and greco-roman categories, taking home the third place honors in each division. Shonn attributes his success this year to the fact that he has increased his training load. "I did well at the Nationals because I worked and trained a lot harder this year." Shonn's Coach Larry Brandon agreed. "I felt that if you consider the caliber of wrestlers that he competed against, Shonn really did an outstanding job." ' Shonn's brother Dustin didn't get a chance to compete in the greco-roman category because he wasn't old enough but, he didn't let that stop him from finishing in 8th place in the freestyle category. "Dustin wrestled his heart out at the Nationals and did a really good job. To me, that's what is important," said Brandon. "I did my best, but I think that if I train harder in the future I can do better," said Dustin. Brandon also said that he wanted to thank the boys' father Reyn for all of his help and for giving him the opportunity to help with the coaching responsiblities. "I've enjoyed watching the boys succeed in wrestling." Brandon also expressed thanks to the Tribe for helping Shonn and Dustin meet the expenses involved with the trip to Wyoming. Next up for Shonn and Dustin will be competing at the AAV. Junior National Wrestling Tournament in Billings, Montana. SILETZGRAND RONDE ELDERS LUNCH There will be another Elders luncheon held here at the office on July 19, 1989. The Grand Ronde elders will be putting the luncheon on for the Silctz elders. Everyone bring their favorite dish! We had a really great time last year, and everyone enjoyed themselves. Looking forward to seeing you there! ELDERS Only 7 more weeks left before Pow Wow! Our Elders program is meeting every Monday between 2:00 and 5:00 pm at the Tribal office. They are makinggive-away items, and enjoying each others company. If you would like to come and join in, we'd love to have you. Pow Wow is drawing near, and we've got lots of things to make yet. ::( X Tribal member Mary Ann Landreth just returned from Vienna, Austria where she studied vocal performance. TRIBAL MEMBER RETURNS Tribal member, Marie Ann Landreth will be returning . from Vienna, Austria July 1, where she has been studying vocal performance and applied music education as a post graduate. Marie Ann graduated from the University of Oregon and was very active in the Opera program. She distinguished herself as a lead performer in several productions as a coloratura soprano. Marie Ann has performed in Eugene, Portland, Roseburg, Bend, Corvallis, Salem, Seattle, San Francisco and Boise. During the past year Marie sang the lead in Donigettis' "Elixer of Love", in Vienna. Other credits include: "Die Zauberlote", Mozart, "La Ceneren tola", Rossini, "Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe, and Pa tience", Gilbert and Sullivan, just to name a few. Of the many scholarships and awards Marie Ann has received, she is most proud of the International Rotary Scholarship that has enabled her to study for two years in Vienna, Austria. During this summer break, Marie will be holding concerts and recitals throughout the State of Oregon. We are very proud of this member and wish her good luck and success in this field of endeavor.
