THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES , , ' ' OF THE GRAND RONDE COMMUNITY ' OF OREGON SMOKE SIGNALS NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN 7 f f I) GRAND RONDE NEWSLETTER August 11, 1986 The Tribal Council has been busy working on the Reservation Plan, due to local opposition circulating throughout the local community. On the 18th of June 1986, the Yamhill County Commissioners held a public meeting In Wlllamlna, OR.. Commissioners from Polk and Tillamook counties were present. Also present were Susan Long, aide to Sen. Hatfield, and Steve Anderson, aide to Rep. AuColn. Representatives from BIA; and from Cooper Consultants were also present. Aside from a few private citizens voicing their opposition to the Reservation Plan, there were some representatives local timber companies and organizations. Their main concern was In the area of timber export. Other areas of concern were management of timber lands. In regard to the export issue, it has been the Tribal Council's position to keep the timber available to the local sawmills, due to the fact we have Tribal members working there. We have been actively seeking some timber consultants and experts to help the Tribal Council in negotiating with the timber companies, which we will be doing for the rest of the year . I also wish to remind you of the next General Council meeting, which will be held on September 7, 1986, at 1:00 p.m. at the Grand Ronde Elementary School . In regard to the Hunting and Fishing Agreement with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Tribal Council is still negotiating with the O.D.F.W. Commissioners. On the 22nd of August, the commissioners will vote whether or not to pass this agreement. The Tribal Council has been formulating a Comprehensive Plan. The purpose of doing a comp. plan is to do some long-range plan ning for the future. The comp. plan will cover many different aspects, such as, housing, future administration buildings, health facilities, set ting up ways to a better life for our elders, and looking for ways to educate our young. Also, in the comp. plan the Council will look into ways to enhance economic development. This is a very important process, as it will help the Tribe expand into a very formal and organized unit of operation. The Council hopes to have a draft of the comp. plan by the first of September, so at the next General Council meeting, the Council will be anxious to hear the advice of our general council members. Best Wishes, Mark A. Mercier, Chairperson UMPOUA MOLALLA ROGUE RIVER KALAPUYA CHASTA PO BOX 38 GRAND RONDE. OREGON 97347 (503)879-5215
