Not much change for salmon in new Columbia River treaty The United States and Canada have spent the past six years reworking a half- century-old deal between the two countries that outlines how the Columbia River is managed for both flood con- trol and hydropower genera- tion. After 19 grueling rounds of negotiations, the two par- ties have announced that an agreement on the Columbia River Treaty has finally been struck. The “agreement in prin- ciple,” released July 11, of- fers a rough outline of pro- visions of the treaty that will be updated. The final version will hold for 20 years before it can be revised. The treaty was negotiated without any tribal input and does not reflect tribal inter- ests, nor does it reflect needs of the river or its fish, ac- cording to the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Com- mission. For the last decade, CRITFC has been pushing for an ecosystem-based function management ap- proach within the treaty that would prioritize things like increased spring and sum- mer flows, restoring fish passages and reconnecting floodplains. Columbia salmon threatened by hot water Smashing records, sock- eye salmon are booming up the Columbia River, in a run expected to top 700,000 fish before it’s over. But a pun- ishing heat wave has made river temperatures so hot many may never make it their last miles home.
