Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon Water: Federal law (Continued from page 1) “And yet federal resources to help tribal governments in Oregon to fix damaged wa- ter systems are woefully lack- ing. The federal government must step up and do more to support these communi- ties working to make perma- nent fixes and ensure water security needed for their long-term health and quality of life.” Senator Merkley said: “As the crisis on the Warm Springs Reservation illus- trated, Native communities in Oregon are facing seri- ous water infrastructure challenges. We need to in- vest in replacing outdated pipe systems, to help ensure that tribal nations have reli- able access to safe drinking December 18, 2019 water for years to come. “This legislation provides a pathway to making those infrastructure upgrades hap- pen, and I’m urging my col- leagues to join us in fighting to get it across the finish line and signed into law.” “This legislation would throw a lifeline to tribes like Warm Springs that are in dire need of water infra- structure improvements to ser ve their tribal membership,” said Tribal Council Chairman Raymond Tsumpti. The Tribal Water Infra- structure Act introduced Thursday will: · Help Oregon tribes con- nect, expand or repair exist- ing public water systems to improve water quality, water pressure or water services by ensuring tribes in the Colum- bia River Basin, and its adja- cent coastal river basins, are Page 9 eligible for the Indian Res- er vation Drinking Water Program; · Authorize the U.S. En- vironmental Protection Agency to fund up to 10 wa- ter improvement projects per year for tribes in the Co- lumbia River Basin and its adjacent coastal river basins; · Require that at least one of the 10 authorized water improvement projects help Western Oregon tribal gov- ernments improve water in- frastructure; and · Make the Indian Res- ervation Drinking Water program permanent and in- crease its funding from $20 million per year to $30 mil- lion per year. On December 12, Sena- tors Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley introduced legisla- tion to improve water qual- ity and services for tribal communities in Oregon.
