Jamboree Day
Don’t miss the War m
Springs Family Jamboree
Day this Thursday, August
15.
From 3-7 p.m. there will
be family fun activities plus
a talent show hosted by Blue
Flamez.
The day will feature jump-
ing houses, rock climbing,
music and new this year: an
outdoor market and food
vendors.

being a vendor, there may

Two August
youth events
Tribal youth ages 14-18
are encouraged to apply to
participate in two outdoor
experiences this month.
There will be a backpack-
ing course August 26-28 on
the Warm Springs Reserva-
tion; and a Deschutes Raft-
ing Course August 26-30.
There will be a commu-
nity gathering planned for all
participants on August 25.
There is no cost to tribal
youth participants, and reg-
istration is due August 16.

The 2019 Public
Safety and Community
Barbecue is coming up
on Saturday, August
31.
The barbecue will
be from noon to 3

The Heart Healthy He-
roes Club is a series of
classes to help you improve
your heart health while sav-
ing money through preven-
tion.
The club will meet next
in Warm Springs on August
20 and 27. The meeting is
from 11 a.m. to noon at the
clinic.
This a is free event to any-
one with heart disease or
other chronic heart condi-
tions, and family members
who would like to learn
more.

YouthBuild
Heart of Oregon
YouthBuild is recruiting
youth ages 16-24 years for
our Fall 2019 cohort start-
ing in mid October 14.
YouthBuild works with
youth who have either have
dropped out of school, or
are on the verge of being
dropped from traditional
high school.
YouthBuild members
earn their GED, high school
diploma, college credit and
job skills. The group works
on credit recovery, and serv-
ing their communities
through building affordable
housing.

construction sites, and lead-
ership development.
Through AmeriCorps
service at YouthBuild youth
can earn the AmeriCorps
Segal Education Award
worth $1,566 towards post-
secondary goals.
YouthBuild requires a
12-month commitment,
along with one year of fol-
low-up services.
There will be an infor-
mation sessions starting on
August 22 at YouthBuild’s
Cloverdale location. As of
now, the only information
session will be at the
Cloverdale in Sisters.
YouthBuild is hoping to
have them elsewhere but
the dates and times have not
been scheduled yet.
Mental Toughness, the
YouthBuild orientation, be-
gins on October 14. If you
know of any youth who
may be interested and have
not been successful in a tra-
ditional high school setting,
please encourage them to
attend.

Locker is a skilled care
provider. Her years of
ser vice at the War m
Springs IHS Health and
Wellness Center have
combined culturally sen-
sitive and clinically appro-
priate women’s health
care and pre-natal care.
As clinic director, Dr.
Locker effectively coor-
dinates care within the lo-
cal community, and with
the local hospitals.
She was honored in
August with the presti-
gious award: Best Practices
in Women’s Health: Focus
on American Indians/
Alaska Native Women’s
Health.
The announcement
comes form the Ameri-
can College of Obstetri-
cians and Gynecologists.
The award recognizes
Dr. Locker for her exem-
plary leadership and ca-
reer-long commitment to
the highest standards of
clinic care for women.
She has done this
through her prace of
Family Medicine at the
Health and Wellness Cen-
ter.
The award also men-
tions Dr. Locker’s numer-
ous impactful roles in the
Portland Area Indian
Health Service regionally,
and the entire IHS nation-
ally.
In her role as clinic di-
rector, she assures that
the same high standards
are met by all the other

ery Center presents Solar
Saturday with Bob Yoesle,
this Saturday, August 17,
2019. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
you can view the surface of
the sun, weather permitting,
through a specially filtered
telescope outside on the
front lawn at Columbia
Gorge Discovery Center,
5000 Discovery Drive, in
The Dalles.
Bob Yoesle will be on hand
to explain the fascinating
physics that underlie the in-
credible features on our dy-
namic sun. Our star is a caul-
dron of incredibly hot gases,
sunspots as big as Earth, and
loops of gas called filaments
and prominences. Using spe-
cial safely-filtered telescopes
you will get an unbelievable
view of the surface of the
sun. An additional Solar Sat-
urday will be held September

and Prevention Programs
are putting on a penny car-
nival with foods, games,
crafts and music on Wednes-
day, August 28 th from 6-8
p.m. in the Youth Center
gym.
Anyone interested in set-
ting up a booth should con-

The Jefferson County Li-
brary Film Center will hold
its Eleventh Annual Screen
on the Green outdoor
movie event this Friday,
August 16 at Sahalee Park
in Madras.
Folks are invited to come
out to the Water Spray Park
before the event. The movie
starts at 8:30. Bring your
own snacks, chairs or blan-
kets. They will show the
movie How to Train Your
Dragon: The Hidden World.

state-wide sexual assault,
domestic violence and child
abuse prevention and inter-
vention efforts within the
Native American and non-
Native communities.
She is widely recognized
as an expert in these areas
in the Portland area and
throughout the Indian
Health Service.
Among her many profes-
sional recognitions and hon-
ors, she is the recipient of
the HIS National Council of
Clinic Directors Out-
standing Physician of the
Year Award and the Di-
rect Services Tribes Out-
standing Achievement
Award for Service in the
IHS Direct Care Pro-
grams.
Dr. Locker, by her
sustained superior per-
formance, career-long
commitment to quality
clinical care and educa-
tion, and her dedication
to promoting and ad-
vancing the health and
well-being of American
Indian women has
clearly earned the dis-
tinction of being the
2019 recipient of the
prestigious award of the
Committee on American
Indian and Alaska Na-
tive Women’s Health of
the American College of
Obstetricians and Gyne-

Award.

at the Community Action
Team office.
This program teaches the
basics you need to know to
start your own business. They
will cover all 12 lessons over
the two Saturdays from 9

A Jefferson County Vet-
erans Service Outreach
officer will be in Warm
Springs at the Warm Springs
Senior Center on the this
Tuesday of each month.
This month the date is Au-
gust 20.
Appointments are avail-
able for the morning by call-

wise, the Veteran’s Service
Officer will be available to
answer questions during and
after the senior meal that
day.
