Two August youth events Tribal youth ages 14-18 are encouraged to apply to participate in two outdoor experiences this month. There will be a backpack- ing course August 26-28 on the Warm Springs Reserva- tion; and a Deschutes Raft- ing Course August 26-30. There will be a commu- nity gathering planned for all participants on August 25. There is no cost to tribal youth participants, and reg- istration is due August 16. YouthBuild Heart of Oregon YouthBuild is recruiting youth ages 16-24 years for our Fall 2019 cohort start- ing in mid October 14. YouthBuild works with youth who have either have dropped out of school, or are on the verge of being dropped from traditional high school. YouthBuild members earn their GED, high school diploma, college credit and job skills. The group works on credit recovery, and serv- ing their communities through building affordable housing. Through AmeriCorps service at YouthBuild youth can earn the AmeriCorps Segal Education Award worth $1,566 towards post- secondary goals. YouthBuild requires a 12-month commitment, along with one year of fol- low-up services. There will be an infor- mation sessions starting on August 22 at YouthBuild’s Cloverdale location. As of now, the only information session will be at the Cloverdale in Sisters. YouthBuild is hoping to have them elsewhere but the dates and times have not been scheduled yet. Mental Toughness, the YouthBuild orientation, be- gins on October 14. If you know of any youth who may be interested and have not been successful in a tra- ditional high school setting, please encourage them to attend. Bob Yoesle will be on hand to explain the fascinating physics that underlie the in- credible features on our dy- namic sun. Our star is a caul- dron of incredibly hot gases, sunspots as big as Earth, and loops of gas called filaments and prominences.
