Cougars Classic co-ed tourney April 22-24
The Warm Springs Cou-
gars youth basketball orga-
nization will host the All In-
dian Co-Ed Classic Basket-
ball Tournament Friday
through Sunday, April 22-24.
Teams in the War m
Springs Cougars Classic tour-
ney will play at the Warm
Springs Youth Center, and
the Warm Springs Commu-
nity Center.
The tournament will be
in two divisions, six teams
per division. For the sixth-
through eighth-grade co-ed
teams; and for the high
school co-ed teams, the
awards include:
Ten championship jack-
ets; 10 runner-up crews;
third and fourth place final-
ist t-shirts. There will be his
and her MVP awards; Mr.
and Ms. Hustle; and All
Tourney Teams.

Kah-Nee-Ta Resort will
host the Mini Marathon on
Saturday, April 30. The win-
ner of the 14.5-mile and 10k,
one male and one female, will
receive a free night at the re-
sort.

Native youth art camp
The Journey’s In Cre-
ativity art camp is a free
pre-college artist in resi-
dence camp at the Or-
egon College of Arts and
Crafts in Portland.
It is specifically de-
signed for Native Ameri-
can youth ages 15-19.
This year’s camp dates
are August 5-18, and the
theme this year is Shat-
tering Stereotypes: The
Confluence of Indigenous
Art & Glass.
Students will be explor-
ing, learning about and
making contemporary art
in glass.
The deadline to apply
is May 1. Twelve students
will be accepted. For

Center hosting
Gourd Dance
The Third Annual Portland
Gourd Dance will be held this
Saturday, April 16 at the Na-
tive American Youth and Fam-
ily Center.
It’s located at 5135 NE
Columbia Blvd in Portland.
The gourd dance program will
begin at 11 a.m. It’s free to
attend, and it’s held outside,
so bring your own chairs.

entry fee for sixth- through
eighth-grades is $150 per
team; and for high school
teams, $200. The tourney is
open to the first six teams in
each division.

School, this Thursday,
April 14.
Stop by the high
school between 8 a.m.
and 4 p.m. for a test
drive.
The Senior Class will
earn $20 for each test
drive. They’re raising
money for the senior
class trip to Disneyland.
Little Miss Warm Springs
meetings are on Wednesdays
from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Com-
munity Center. All interested
girls and parents are welcome.

Tribes, lawmakers make river housing tour

Council Chairman Austin
Greene and other tribal lead-
ers from the region met in
March with federal lawmak-
ers regarding tribal housing
at the Columbia River.
They toured four Zone 6
in-lieu and treaty fishing ac-
cess sites, the visit highlight-
ing the tribal housing crisis
at the river.

Earl Blumenauer and Sen.
Jeff Merkley.

Youth baseball camp
To parents and future
Madras High School base-
ball players:
Get your 2016 baseball
season off to a great start
by attending the Madras
High School baseball
camp, hosted by coaching
staff and current players.
You have the option of
attending one, or both
days: April 28 or May 1.
This camp is open to all
players in grades second
through eighth.
This is a great way for
players to tune up for the
upcoming season, and
learn new baseball funda-
mentals in a safe and fun
environment.
Players who attend
will participate in many
of the same detail ori-
ented drills used by the
Madras High School
baseball program.
The camps are $20
each; or $30 for both
days. Walk-in’s are wel-
come. Checks made pay-
able to ‘Madras High
School Baseball.’

of the two Congressional
leaders. They wanted to see
first-hand the housing condi-
tions at the fishing sites.
Many tribal members
along the river suffer in sub-
standard living conditions, as
a consequence of displace-

ment by the construction and
operation of the federal Co-
lumbia River dams.
The loss of tribal villages
and homes has been a con-
tentious issue for decades.
The tribes continue to in-
sist that as long as the dams
exist, the federal government
has a continuing obligation to
mitigate the impacts caused
by the dams.
This includes the loss of
villages and housing. Con-

some solution.
The tribes and CRITFC
meanwhile are working to
develop a plan as to how the
situation could be remedied.
Desert Peaks Golf Course will host a fund-
raiser golf tourney to help the Madras High
School boys and girls basketball teams.
The 4-person scramble will be on May 14.
Entry fee is $60 per person; or $240 per team.
