The tribe submitted a land- into-trust application to use a 2.4-acre site in M edford for . a Class II facility. The Bureau o f Indian Af fairs has finally announced its intent to prepare an environ mental impact statement for the project. “Thé tribe has submitted an application to the BIA re questing that approximately 2.4 acres o f land be trans ferred from fee to trust sta tus, u p o n w hich the tribe Some material from the w ould .renovate an existing remains was removed for ge bow ling alley to convert it netic testing. Scientists publish research into ‘Kennewick Man’ Scientists have finally pub lished their research into the 9,500-year-old rem ains o f the Kennewick Man. The Washington Post ob tained a copy o f Kennewick Man: The Scientific Investi gation o f an A ncient A m eri can Skeleton, which is due out on September 10. The paper said the 688- page book makes the case that Kennewick Man was not a “longtime resident” o f the area in Washington where he died nearly 10,000 years ago. Scientists instead suggest that he may have come to the area from fu rth e r up th e N o rth w e st co ast o r from Alaska. “K ennew ick Man could not have been a longtime resi dent o f the area w here he was found, but instead lived m ost o f his adult life some where along the N orthw est and N o rth P acific c o ast where marine mammals were readily available,” the co n cluding chapter o f the book states, the Post reported. F ive N o rth w e s t trib es claim Keiinewick Man as an ancestor. He was discovered in 1996 on federal land that w as o n ce a p a rt o f th e Umatilla Reservation. Instead o f returning the remains to the tribes, how ever, the 9th Circuit Court o f Appeals in 2004 said the re mains were too old to be cov ered by the Native American Graves Protection and Repa triation Act. The book is the result o f 16 days o f studies th a t w ere conducted after scientists won the case. The U.S. Army Corps o f Engineers retains custody o f the remains and hasn’t deter mined what to do with them. Scientists, however, want to continue further studies. As part o f the process, the BIA will hold a scoping meet ing in Medford on February 3. The agency will then issue a draft ElS— and, eventually, a final ElS——but there is no timeline for a decision. Generally, land placed in trust after 1988 can’t be used for gaming.
