This fire crew (right) was
out at the Shaniko Butte
fire last week. By early
this week, the blaze had
grown to over 50,000
acres, with containment
near, as cooler weather
arrived. One home on the
reservation was lost in this
fire. The Shaniko Butte fire
burnedon the east side of
the reservation, while the
Logging Unit Complex fires
burned to the west.
One of the Logging Unit
fires was burning in the
Sidwalter area, requiring a
level evacuation
notification, which was
relaxed on Tuesday.

The Fourth of July 2014 Parade
Dear horse racers,
At the Wasco County Fair,
as the RVs and tents crowd out
what was once the teepee vil-
lage, we strived to keep the In-
dian encampment and the pro-
grams alive.
Three years in a row my fam-
ily sponsored the three-quarter
mile races. We were honoring
our daughter Eliza “Hot Dog”
Greene. I had planned to spon-
sor the Relay Race this year in
honor of our jockey Eliza and
her holders, the late Jim Wesley
and Oly Meanus. However, I am
unable to sponsor it this year
because of unforeseen circum-
stances.
I am very sorry.
