Spílygy T ym o o , W grm Springs, O regon February 5, 2014- Kah-Nee-Ta looks to rebound this year K ah-N ee-Ta Resort and Spa is looking to rebound in 2014, after a tough year in 2013. This year Kah-Nee-Ta will continue working with Travel Oregon to increase the num ber o f visitors from Japan, said Carlos Smith, resort gen eral manager. H e made the re p o rt last w eek at Tribal Council. During 2013, Smith said, K ah -N ee-T a w elcom ed a large n um ber o f Japanese guests, bringing in $250,000 in business. This was the first time in six years that the Japanese visitors had been, back to Kah-Nee-Ta. They like the resort, Smith said, because many o f them are from To kyo or other big cities in Ja pan. In the cities* the stars are not visible, while at Kah- N ee-Ta on clear nights the stars are very bright. T he Ja p a n e se g u ests also like horseback riding, and meet ing Native Americans. Smith said the hope is to double the am ount o f Japa nese business in 2014, and then double again in 2015. Another project in 2014 is the development o f other foreign markets such as China, Tur key and Germany. The unm anned aerial ve hicles project on the reserva tion has a great potential for Elders invited to Honor Day T he C oquille In d ian Tribes and the Confeder ated T rib es o f C oos, L ow er U m p q u a and Siuslaw Indians are host ing the Eighteenth Annual O re g o n T rib al E ld ers H onor Day on March 7- 8. The Warm Springs Se nior Citizen program is tak ing a group, leaving on the March 5 and returning on the March 8. For m ore inform ation call 553-3313. K a h -N ee-T a, S m ith said. There will be training sessions, lasting up to several weeks, for people who are learning to use the UAVs. They will need somewhere to stay, and K ah-N ee-Ta could provide the lodging. This could bring in sub stantial revenue not only dur ing the spring and summer seasons, but in the fall and winter as well. So the coming year looks to be a good one for the re sort. Last year a kitchen fire during the sum m er caused significant damage: $1.5 mil lion in property damage, and $700,000 in lost business. Insurance covered much o f th e loss, “b u t you are never made completely whole after som ething like that,” Smith said. Most o f the damage came from water, as the emergency sprinkler system was in good working order, he said. The w ooden floor o f the lodge lobby had to be replaced, work that was just finishing up recently. After the kitchen fire, the Sunnyside fire b ro k e out, burning up to the edge o f the lodge. This caused $57,000 in p ro p e rty dam age and $271,000 in lost business, in surance covering about 60 percent. Pgge $ Resolution process at Tribal Council D e p artm en ts, e n te r prises and individuals who have proposed resolutions for Tribal Council should be aware o f a new Coun cil policy. A proposed resolution should be submitted to the office o f the Secretary- Treasurer as soon as pos sible before the Council meeting, such as a week before the meeting. The previous practice a was for people to show up at C ouncil w ith a p ro - 3 posed resolution, expect-.ja ing Council to review and ■ approve the proposal at J that time. This does not allow for I reasonable time to review | the proposal; so Council 8 adopted the new policy j last month. N o tic e re g a rd in g p e r c a p ita s !
