New Counseling therapy offers emotional healing
Any mention o f “going to
therapy” for som e peo p le
brings up images o f telling
grueling details o f your past
w ith m inim al results—-and
that is the image Dr. Shilo
Tippett wants to change.
In O ctober, Dr. T ippett
becam e a L evel I train ed
th erap ist o f E M D R — Eye
M ovem ent D esensitization
and Reprocessing therapy.
E M D R is a m eth o d o f
therapy that allows people to
heal emotional distress from
disturbing life experiences
more quickly than traditional
psychotherapy. It is a process
that allows the mind and spirit
to recover from em otional
trauma by initiating a natural
healing process.
In E M D R therapy, eye
movements are used to help
process memories and feel
ings. In successful E M D R
therapy, the meaning o f past
events changes at an em o
tional level.
This leads to a transforma
tion o f previous wounds into
an empowerment o f the in
dividual w ithout having to
discuss the memory in detail
o r do hours o f hom ew ork
each week.
“I have seen transform a
tion happen in a single ses
sion. It is humbling to witness
and be a part o f the change
in o u r co m m u n ity ,” ' says
Tippett.

as EM D R Level I therapists.
Ashley Blodgett, Master o f
Social Work (MSW), recently
completed the EM D R train
ing. “It is amazing how effec
tive EM D R can be with chil
dren. Trauma can affect any
one, so it was great to learn
from our training that chil
dren can heal using EM D R
th e ra p y as w ell,” says
Blodgett.

sooner rather than later,’’ says
Tippett.
