A thank you T hank you to everyone who bought tickets fpr last m onth’s last raffle. The first w inner, M arcia M enthorn, chose the king-size, Native print fleece blanket with two pillow shames. The O ld Timers hunting knife with four inter-change able blades and belt sheath went to Allen, (Stretch) Jones. Allen was the fifth person who called. But for those I called that missed the call back time, one o f your tickets will automati cally be put in the next raffle, which will be mid-January. So keep smiling, you still have a chancel My Story I came all the way from Florida to help care for my elderly parents, R obert and L upe Samuels. I had just opened a fully-equipped ce ram ic stu d io in F lo rid a , where I lived at the time. I closed up the studio an d d ro v e across th e co u n try back to the Rez. N ow I would like to get back to my liv elih o o d o f making and selling ceramic bowls, platters, and sculp tures. This is w hat I do for a living. This is what I love. Also, stay tuned for the announcements o f Two Food F u n d ra ise rs th is m o n th . Come Eat! Pamela Louis Our finances Here on the Rez we have many industrialized en ter prises but it appears as if vir tually all o f them have be come privatized. W hatever the excuse, m ost o f the en terprises tu rn ed over zero dividends or ihinimal. The total was only one and a half million^ which is way down com pared to an average o f $15 million in dividends an nually. O n the outside, if a gen eral manager fails to produce revenue for the com pany’s owner, he quickly sends him packing his shopping bag. For w hatever the reason, po o r marketing? Also, regarding the G orge casino referen dum, a few people did have good intentions for the tribes to succeed, but a special in terest group had infringe ment in mind. T hat referen-. dum should have been void because it was fraudulent from the get-go, as votes were bought and paid for. Later on we find out over $30 million in revenue has been embezzled. That money is the property belonging to the victimized CTWS tribal members. Where is our corps o f tribal attorneys? W ho are the profiteers? W ho is ac countable and why is this criminal act n ot being inves tigated? T he affliction and em bezzlem ent has caused u n w a rra n te d o p p re s sio n , hardship and added burdens upon the tribal members, and has contributed to an .eco nomic disaster, forced retire m ents, jobs cut, furloughs, per capita and senior pensions severely cut, Christmas bonus eliminated. While the blood sucking turncoats, cronies and double dippers laugh all the way to the bank. Respect- fully, Wishes... H appy New Year to my family. Payday loans and autom o bile title loans are a lot like eggs. They can be easy to get into, hard to get o u t of, and ju s t as m essy w h en m is handled. My New Year’s wish would be for everybody to avoid payday and title loans like the plague. They are just “credit balls” to juggle, they are boul- ders. They hurt w hen dropped. Possible results may include sleepless nights, ulcers, and calls from bad tempered col lectors. D id y o u h e a r Sen. McCain’s com m ent the day after the election? H e said, “I slept like a baby— sleep two hours, wake up and cry, sleep two hours, wake up and cry.” All he lost was an election. H e still had his day job. He was beyond the stress o f cam paigning. Shucks, he was even beyond having to make good on his campaign promises. . Holidays, birthdays, and family emergencies seem to generate a lot o f demand for th ese sh o rt te rm “ cre d it” products. Buying is fun; later, paying can be difficult. A classic solution is to rob Peter to pay Paul. Sometimes fin d in g P e te r is d ifficu lt. W hat to do? B est, is d o n ’t do these s h o r t te rm lo an s. T h e n , I f a person has to do a payday or car title loan, he should commit himself to paying it off fast... clumsy juggling won’t be an issue and finding Peter be comes unnecessary. I f a person has to do a pa,yday or car title loan, he should com m it him self to paying it o ff fast. Otherwise, the interest, penalties, re-up fees, and collection costs will eat thè borrower alive. O f course, if that were to happen, he wouldn’t have to worry about sleepless nights and ulcers. The moral o f the story is this: I f we have no self-disci pline, no job, or no buffaloes tô b u rp , we sh o u ld n ’t do credit and, for darn sure, we shouldn’t do payday loans. That’s a good time to pay cash for everything-—ahd sleep better. Som etim es all th a t’s re quired is for someone to say, No. Parents should know how to do th a t fo r th e ir kids. Maybe the Unabridged Stan dard Universal, P aren t In struction G uide will cover that w hen it is written. My N ew Year’s wish is for everyone to do well and then to do better— for self, for family, and for the commu nity. H appy N ew Year. j Í ( . ' ■ ft I
