Muriel Suppah Memorial “Pennies make dollars.” T hat’s a 1 percent saying. So is, “Keep track o f the pennies, and the dollars will take care o f themselves.” Both sayings can apply to income and expenses. W hen b u d g e tin g tim e co m es around, though, m ost o f our focus is on expenses. Im provem ent in the bal ance between the two usually comes quickest with reduc tions in spending. Governm ents sometimes forget that. They often try to force a balance by' raising taxés, selling bonds, or print ing money. O ur personal debt capacity limitations— income, savings, bank and credit card limits— aren’t that easily over come. “O ne Percent” Louie has been my best example o f re ducing business expenses. Louie owned three chains o f restaurants. His goal was profit. H e increased profits by first looking for ways to save 1 percent from expenses. V Sometimes he saved more. H e never took it out o f his employees. Louie would concentrate on just one possible savings task at a time. W hen that was done, he would pop his head up and look for another sav ing opportunity. The technique worked for him. H ow could saving 1 per cent from our spending help us? Consider this. D o you and your family like hamburgers? H ow many times a month? My answers are “Yes” and “Too often!” I f tak e h o m e pay is $2,000 a m onth, one percent is $20. T hat would be about $5 a week. T hat’s not enough to buy m ost o f the Combo meals at McDonalds. C u t o u t o n e O rig in a l Burger Combo meal a week and you will save slightly more than 1 percent a month. Cut out two Combo meals a week and you’ll save over 2 percent— and maybe lose a couple pounds. Bless those unintended consequences. W hat if-you cut o ut one Combo meal a week for each mem ber o f a family o f four? T hat’s sixteen a m onth for a saving o f $80 th at m onth. N ow you have saved over 4 percent. In v e s t th a t $80 each m o n th at 5 percent for 15 years and you could end up with over $21,000. W hat would that buy? H ow about two $10,000 college degrees? Can that be done? It has been done! I ’ll get back to you on that idea. Math trick And now, since math magi cally came up again, here is another quick “how to do it in your head” math trick. W hen multiplying m ost 3- digit numbers by eleven, say 11 x 235, the first num ber o f your answer will be the (2); the second number will be the sum o f the 2 & 3 (5); the third num ber will be the sum o f 3 & 5 (8); and the last num ber will be five (5). The sam e m eth o d w orks w ith most three digit multiplicands. The answer is 2,585. To see how it works, do the problem on paper and watch how the numbers add down for the answer. Then, compare the numbers you are adding dow n to those you calculated from left to right. They are the same. A nother way o f “seeing” how it works is to replace the numbers with letters— the 2 becomes A, the three is B, the five is C— and the “ru le” would be: the first num ber in the answer is A, the second num ber is A + B, the third num ber is B + C, and the last num ber in the answer is C. O n paper we usually are taught to calculate from right to left. In our heads, it’s left to right and a lot quicker. Wasn’t that fun? A n o th er quiz— W hat is the first three-digit num ber that will make you calculate a five-digit answer when mul tiplying by eleven? . T he correct answ er will earn another ice cream cone. We have done three mul tiplication head games in the last three papers. Addition, subtraotion, and division can also be made easy, quick, and fun. Are you interested in see ing more? I f so, give me a call. My num ber is 541-553- 3512.
