Father and son, Lee and Justin Tom, have qualified for the Indian Nationals Finals Rodeo this year. Lee will compete in the Senior Team Roping; and Jus tin in the Open Team Roping event. Both Lee and Justin have qualified through the Tour, which is the accumulation of the top 10 contestants com peting at various Tour Ro deos, held in the 13 nation ally recognized regions. Lee is roping with his part ner Britt Givens of Riverton, Wyoming. Justin is roping with his partner, Terry Doka, of Fort McDowell, Ariz. L ee’s son-in-law Mike Holyan qualified in the Tie Down Calf Roping event. Nephew-in-law Clinton Bruised Head qualified in the Steer Wrestling; and Lee’s two grandsons, Benjamin Billey and Gavin Begay, have quali fied in the Junior Bull Riding. Rodeo has been in these families for many generations, and continues still. Lee was a'National Finals saddle bronc rider in his early years, who refired and turned to Team Roping to continue traveling to rodeos with his family and still compete. This is the third year that Senior and Junior events have been incorporated into the National Finals Rodeo. Lee has qualified each year. His Canadian family has competed for many genera tions and have numerous championships as well. This is Benjamin and Gavin’s second qualification. Gavin Begay comes from a family of ropers: His father Mackey Begay was an avid roper, his grandfather Tom Begay Sr. was a Team Roper and Calf Roper, and known nation-wide for his skills. Uncle Anson Begay roped in the professional, semi-pro, amateur and Indian rodeo cir- ’ cuits. Somewhere along the way t the fodeo bug caught Gavin, shown in the desire to ride sheep, calfs, steers and now Junior Bulls. Benjamin also started up the ranks with sheep to bulls, and puts forth a lot of effort in being in shape. Both Gavin and Benjamin work out daily, run and practice riding every chance they get. The Indian National Finals begins November 5. Look for various fundraisers in the community by family and friends to help send these cowboys off to the National Finals, to chase the dream of becoming an Indian World Champion.
