T he Y outh C onference was the 2013 College and Career Day that took place July 10. The host group was the Job Creation and Devel opm ent Program. Support ing departments were Indian Health Services, the Commu nity H ealth Insurance P ro gram R eauthorization A ct (CHIPRA), Power and Water E nterprises, W arm Springs C om posite Products, Kah- Nee-Ta Resort and Spa, In dian H ead Casino, the Senior P ro g ram , th e M useum at Warm Springs, Nike and N7, and the Community Health Education Team (CHET). This event was to inform our tribal youth about possible college scholarships and ca reer choices. The youth conference was an o p p o rtu n ity fo r trib al youth to learn about making the right choices after they graduate from high school, and to learn ab o u t career choices and higher education goals. T he presenters were County fa ir is this week T h e 2013 Jefferso n County Fair and Rodeo is this Friday th ro u g h Saturday, Ju ly 24-27. Admission is free. The theme o f the fair this year is “80 Years o f Cowboy Boots & Coun try Roots.” This Wednesday, July 24, is Veterans Day at the Fair, sponsored by the Jefferson County Veter ans Department. Veter ans breakfast is at 8:30 a.m.; fair opening Cer Students arrive for the conference. local tribal members who are college graduates and high school graduates. A t this time we w ant to thank our recent high school g rad u ates: A m b e r Solis, A shley W elden, L atish a Waheneka, Mileena Edwards, Lisa Ike-Lopez, w ho spoke about future goals after high school. We also w an t to th an k Marissa Ahern, and past col lege graduates Rachel Macy, S u n m iet M ab en , M ike Holyan and Danny Martinez. To Anita Davis from the Comm unity H ealth E duca tion Team, We would like to thank you for doing the open ing ceremony and speaking to the students as well. Pgge 5; In conclusion, overall the conference was a great suc cess. We had a total o f 69 stu dents in attendance and a handful o f colleges such as the U niversity o f O regon, Mt. H ood Community Col lege, IT T Technical Institute, Blue M ountain Community College, as well as military per sonnel and a representative fro m th e W arm S prings Telecom, who set up infor m ation booths. We would really like to thank D eborah Alvarez, Carolyn W inishut, Jo ie Sim tustus and Phyllis Shawaway from the CHIPRA organization w ho were big supporters o f the youth con ference. T his S atur day is C A N C ancer D ay (wear purple). Also Saturday: 8 a.m.—1 p.m. - O utdoor cooking con test under the pavilion, spon sored by Oregon Beef Com pany. $10 per plate. AU pro ceeds go to 4-H program and the Jefferson C ounty Fair Complex. 8 a.m.-lO a.m. Bucka- roo Breakfast, sponsored by M cDonalds Restau rant o f Madras. $5 per plate. All proceeds go to 4-H and the fair complex. Carnival tickets are on sale at Fair Complex of fice or Jefferson County F in an ce D e p a rtm e n t (only 1,400 for sale at the $22 advance price). Event sale p rice $28. R odeo gate: $8 p er p erso n , 5 years o f age and younger free (limited seating). Howlak Tichum Lawrence H. Welter, 1938-2013 Dr. Lawrence H. Wel ter passed away on July 12, 2013 after a coura geous battle with cancer. B orn in St. H elens, Oregon on February 12, 1938, Larry was raised on the Warm Springs In dian Reservation, which he caUed his childhood home. His education started in th e little one ro o m school house on the In dian A gency cam pus, co n tin u ed on th ro u g h M adras U n io n H ig h School in M adras, and finished with his gradua tion from the University o f O re g o n S ch o o l o f Medicine in 1962. U p o n fin ish in g his training at Philadelphia G e n e ra l H o s p ita l, h e jo in e d A sso c ia te d R a d i ologists o f Alameda H os pital, A lam eda, Calif., w here he w orked until 2005. His special interest was aviation w hich led him in 1990 to b u ild his ow n Glassair aircraft in the base m ent o f his O akland Hills home he shared with his be loved wife o f 36 years, Janet Gray Welter. H e flew his plane for 20 years and then donated it to the O akland Aviation M u seum. H e was also a gifted artist whose special love was painting on silk. He-was an > avid enthusT ast o f boating, skiing, tink ering and inventing. His pat ented invention for a medi cal device is stiU in general use. Besides his wife Janet, Larry is survived by his sisters, Marilyn Englund, Phyllis Welter, and his de v o te d n ep h ew s, L arry A usm an, G reg A usm an and niece Pam Ausm an Loehner, as weU as their children. His family will miss his sense o f hum or and gen erous nature. There will be a Memo rial Mass on Wednesday, A ugust 21, 2013 at 11 a.m . at th e C h u rch o f Jo h n F ish er, 7007 SW 46th Ave., Portland. Re ception will follow at the home o f Marilyn and Bill Englund.
