March is National Reading Month
R ead aloud to your'child.
Just 20 m inutes a day m akes a
world o f difference over a child’s
form ative years. A child’s read
ing skills are im portant to their
success in school and work- in
addition, reading can be a fun and
imaginative activity for children,
w hich opens doOrs to all kinds
o f new w orlds for them, g
P arents and'fam ily play a
critical role in helping their chil
dren develop not only the ability
to read, but also an enj oyment o f
reading. 9
• T u rn o f f th e tu b e .
Start by limiting TV viewing time.
• Teach b y exam ple. I f
you have books, newspapers and
m agazines around your house,
and your child sees you reading,
ithen your child will learn that you
v alu e read in g . You can’t over
estimate the value o f modeling.
• R e a d together. R ead
ing w ith your child is a great ac
tivity. It not only teaches your
child that reading is im portant to
you, but it also offers a chance to
talk about the book, andsOften
o th e r is s u e s w ill co m e u p.
B ooks can really open the tines
o f com munication between par
i â t and child.
• H it th e lib ra ry. T ry
finding library books about, cur
rent issues or interests in your
fam ily’s or child’s life,' and then
reading them together. For. e x
am ple, read a book about going
to the dentist prior to your-thild’s
n ex t dental ex'arn, Jfll g e t som e
books about your, child favorite
animals. Ifyourchildlikéssuper
heroes, ask your librarian to rec-
om m end a good com ic book for
your child.
There are m any w aysto in
clude reading in your ehild’sKfe,
starting in babyhood, and con
tinuing through the teen years..
Focus on literacy activities that
your Child enjoys, so that read
ing is a treat, not a chore.
