Norene Sampson demonstrated her traditional talent, answered - questions from the judges, and danced. She was named Miss Warm Springs 2013. Here is her state ment to the community: Greetings my W arm Springs people, I am p ro u d to be a tribal m em ber o f the C onfederated Tribes o f W arm Springs, and honored to represent our tribe as the 2013 Miss Warm Springs. This is an opportunity that many young ladies look forward to. I ’m excited and looking for ward to a memorable year. Carroll Dick, a special thanks to you and your contribution. I will wear your beautifully-made crow n and banner w ith great < pride. I want to say thank you to Kah-Nee-Ta for the nice jacket. Thank you to a form er M iss W arm Springs 2013 Nprene Sampsqn Counseling Center reopens after remodel New offices T he P revention P rogram em ployees now have their offices in the downstairs o f the Counseling Cen ter. Alcohol and D rug counseling services are on the ground level floor and on the second floor, which also houses mental health services. Before the remodel, there was no central reception area at Counsel ing. T he ground-level floor now in cludes a reception area just inside the main front doors. T he handicap access is m uch better, both leading up to and inside the building. Thè new air conditioning system is a great improvement. Each floor now has its ow n tem perature control. The air conditioning was the single most expensive part o f the project. The remodeling w ork included new p aint and carpeting, and new restrooms. T he old dormitóry-style restroom s were rem oved and are now additional office space. T he Counseling C enter build ing is the old girls dorm . T here were some health and safety issues th at had to be addressed during the re-model, including rem oval o f som e asbestos and lead paint. T h e rem o d elin g was fu n d ed through a grant and through Indian H ealth Services. C ost was about $600,000. There will be a public dedication ceremony in late Febru ary or in March. Bidding process begins for WS k-8 construction Tribal and school district offi cials conducted a pre-bid m eet ing for general contractors inter ested in the $20-million Warm Springs k-8 school project. Ten general contractors at tended the meeting, held at the C redit E n terp rise conference ro o m . T h e c o n tracto rs w ere from the Central Oregon region, and two from Portland. The meeting was to provide them with a scope o f the con struction project, said Laurie Danzuka, school district board chairwoman. Construction on the school is set fo r May, and is scheduled for completion by the start o f the 2Q14 school year. In other recent school news, the district and tribes hosted a th re e -d a y v is it by R ich ard DeLorenzo, an education consult ant who has success with school improvement in Alaska districts. D e L o ren zo v isite d th e high school, middle school and Warm Springs Elementary School. H e m et w ith teachers and students, and also w ith Tribal Council and m anagem ent, the E d u c a tio n C o rtim ittee, and school district board members. H e attended the Y outh A rt E x hibit opening at the M useum at W arm Springs. The school district may be in terested in working m ore with DeLorenzo, Danzuka said. “We’ll continue to talk With him, and decide in February w hether to move forward,” she said. “H e has had great success with schools in Alaska, and we asked him to take a look at our schools.” The idea would be to build on the work the schools have been doing for student performance, n o t to begin some new program, Danzuka. An approach that D eLorenzo advocates is a transferring o f learning from teacher to student. Ninety-percent o f students who Were u n d e r-p e rfo rm in g have shown progress through the ap proach, D eLorenzo reported. In o th er district news: T he Madras High School ROTC pro gram will represent the state o f O regon schools at the Seventy Year Commemoration o f the D - Day invasion in France in 2014. My goal is to represent our tribes 110 percent. As a young adult, I understand the tribes’ financial situation, b u t I will en deavour to n ot let that deter me and my representation, ThereL fore, I’m willing to w orkhard to raise additional funding for travel expenses. I have already gathered items for a raffle which I will start selling tickets for at the Lincoln’s Birthday Powwow. I will be having fundraising events such as lu n ch eo n s and bake sales, as well as taking orders for Wing dresses, contemporary pow wow outfits— yep, I love to sew. I hope you will support my ef forts by purchasing raffle tick ets or attending any o f my up coming fundraising events. I strive to and will be the best ambassador I can be in repre senting Warm Springs. I plan to represent the tribes at as many powwows and events as possible. Ti>e community gathered recently T he sta ff o f the C om m unity Counseling Center moved back to their newly-remodeled building last week. The move took about three full days. The staff had been working at various locations around the cam pus for the past year or so, while the building was being remodeled. The move last week was big, as there are several employees in the depart ments at the center. D uring the move, all the office equipm ent had to be taken from storage and from the tem porary offices to the new ones. Tribal Utilities, some limited du ration workers, and inmates assisted with the work. In order to change your voting district, contact the Vital Statistics D epartm ent, located at the admin istration building. These are other im portant dates for the upcom ing election o f the Twenty-Sixth Tribal Council o f the C o n fe d e ra te d T ribes o f W arm Springs: March 4: Nominations— All dis tricts. March 5-8: Verify candidate eli gibility and prepare ballots. March 11: Approval resolution setting election date. Mail absentee ballots. Tuesday, April 16: Election date. April 17: Certify election results. April 19: Deadline for challenges and appeals. Monday, May 6: Installation o f the Twenty-Sixth Tribal Council.
