E Coosh EEWA: The way it is Page 4 Trash Letters to the editor Talk To Veterans By Yvonne Iverson As 2012 came to and end, so did free garbage pickup service for Warm Springs. This got people talking and com plaints sta rte d flying, T h ere was sp eculation o f what would happen without reg u la r g a r bage pick up. Som e had Spilyay their garbage Speaks serv ice p aid for before the en d o f th e year, and oth ers did not even know that th e change was coming until their garbage was not picked up on the regular schedule. People who were paying for pick-up were concerned that everyone would be us ing the service that they are paying for, and how do they prevent that? There were a lot o f ques tions and concerns regarding the garbage on the Rez. Pic tu res of o v e rflo w in g d u m p s te rs w ere seen on Facebook. Tribal Council m et on the issue Monday, seven days af ter the changes took effect. A m o tio n w as m ade an d passed to restore garbage ser vice to the reservation. So now all the work that was done to make the transi tion to paid garbage service has to be undone. Staff are w orking to re turn to regular garbage ser vice. “As much as possible, try to empty stuff yourself,” said N ancy C ollins, tribal' Sanitarian. ’ “The landfill and transfer stations are all open 24-seven, and you can take it to the transfer stations. We will try to get back to residential ser vice as soon as possible.” I f you were one o f those proactive folks who paid for garbage service, you will be receiving a refund. There is always the option to continue to pay for the service to help the depart ment, as this is only a tem po rary fix for this year. Sanita tion and Landfill will m ost likely be facing cuts again in the next budget year. M any folks are very thankful for the restoration o f service. Fire destroys Colville Reservation longhouse ColviEe tribal regaEa used in reEgious and ctdtural cel ebrations were lost in a D e cem ber fire th at destroyed the Chief Joseph N ez Perce L onghouse on the ColviEe Reservation at Nespelem. An electrical malfunction apparently started the fire. Flames were too intense for firefighters to enterthe budd ing. Fortunately, no one was injured. The budding was a spiri tual and cultural center. It also used for meeting and events. Tribal historians are working to identify items that were lost. The foEowing is a state m ent from tribal chairm an Jo h n Sirois: O ur community, especiaEy the Longhouse community, stood in a state o f shock a day after Christmas. A t ap proximately 12:30 a.m. that morning, a fire broke out at the Chief Joseph N ez Perce Longhouse. The longhouse completely burned to the ground, despite a vaEant effort to save the structure. The fire response team ar rived minutes after the blaze started; however, the flames were such that the fire ren dered the budding a total loss. Tribal poEce were investi gating the scene and aE pre liminary evidence suggests that an electrical malfunction was the cause o f the blaze. The ColviEe tribes’ insur ance company has been noti fied and efforts to replace the structure are underway. This budding was m ore than a place o f worship. It was a place o f giving and a place o f teaching and love. O ur prayers are w ith all those famdies affected, and we ask that our heavy hearts are Efted in time. g
