T he current Tribal Council has set aside Jan, 24-25 for consider ation o f the future finatices-of the tribes, as a way o f planning the tran sition tò thè next Council. The agenda on those days may also include consideration o f the idea o f having the Tribal Council positions as paid positions. The cur rent policy is that a person elected to Tribal Council keeps his or her job while serving on Council. A rea sonable alternative to this could be to pay a salary to those who are serv- ing on Council. O ther upcom ing items: Tribal Council on Monday, Jan. 14, will consider the recom mendations for judgeships on the tribal Appeals Court. Council on Tuesday, Jan, 15, will meet with tribal enterprise representatives. This ' is part o f the effort to determine and guide future tribal finances. ■Tribal Council this w eek is meeting with thé Fish and Wild life Com m ittee at Kah-Nee-Ta. — Dave McMechan Miss Warm Springs Pageant coming up T he 2013 Miss W arm Springs P a g e a n t w ill b e h e ld o n th e e v e n in g o f J a n u a r y 23 at th e Agency Longhouse. As o f earlier this week, there w ere at least four contestants planning to com pete in the pageant. T hat is the m ost num ber o f con testants for the past several years o f the pageant, said Bridgette Scott, who is helping to organize the event. The evening begins with dinner at 6 p.m. and the pageant at 7. O ther judging categories are the candidates’ poise and person ality, beauty and appearance, and skill at a traditional activity such as cooking, dancing, drumming, language etc. T he w inner o f the pageant represents the tribes at many events in Indian Country during the year. A t the pageant this m onth, Miss W arm Springs 2012 Chloe Lynn Suppah will crown the win ner o f the 2013 pageant. School design meeting in Simnasho next week The design o f the Warm Springs k-8 school will be discussed at a community meeting in Simnasho on Thursday, Jan. 17, starting at 6 p.m. The architects, BBT Architects o f Bend, recently provided the m ost recent design concept. You can see the design drawings on K W SO ’s Facebook page, and com m ent on the proposal at the January 17 meeting. A design team has been working for the p ast couple o f m onths with architects, the project manager, and the Office o f the Chief Operations Officer. T he team has m et with the membership to gather input, and will continue this process next week at Simnasho. Construction work on the school is set to start in the spring. The construction timeline is a little more than one year, with the school opening at the start o f the 2014 school year. ‘ During construction, as many as 200 local jobs will be created, o f varying durations. Within the next sev eral weeks, members will be noti fied o f the dates for the Council candidate nominating meetings. The Twenty-Sixth Tribal Coun cil will then be sworn in to office around the beginning o f May. Coun cil member terms (except for those o f the chiefs) are fo r three years. The design concept includes the main building, a sports field, two park ing lots, an exercise path around the 20-acre site.. Snow slide The kids took advantage o f the wintery weather conditions recently, using the hill next to the Community Center for sledding during their break from school. The snow lasted through the 509-J school district’s w inter break. The sled run evolved each day with added jumps and be came faster with overnight tem peratures in the teens creating an icy crust. W hen the kids got cold they w ent into the center where Rec reation was able to provide hot chocolate to warm up. _ Yvonne Iverson Yvonne Iverson/Spilyay American Legion Post opening : Veterans and their families arc in -. vited to the Warm Springs Veterans Hall next week, for the opening of the American Legion Post 48. The dedication of the post is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The American Legion Post will be housed in the Veterans Hall with the VFW Post 4217. T he A m erican L egion is the nation’s largest w artim e veterans service organization, comm itted to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our com munities, advocating patriotism and honor, prom oting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service-members and vet erans. ■ T he American Legion P ost 48 will be holding their regular m eet ings on the third Tuesday o f each m onth at 6 p.m. The VFW Post 4217 regular meetings are on the first Thursday o f each m onth at 6 p.m. The tribal Veterans Services O f ficer is Keith Baker. Garbage pick-up to continue Tribal Council m et M onday and voted to restore garbage pick up service o n the reservation at no cost to W arm Springs residents. It was announced at a General Council meeting late last year that due to a cut to the Utilities budget they could no longer provide free garbage pickup service: to residents and tribal departments. The change took place on Janu ary 1; but Council this week voted to restore the service. In the week prior to this deci sion, Sanitation staff were rem ov ing dumpsters from departments and placing them in central locations for public use. “For a little while people will have to be patient,” said Nancy Collins, tribal Sanitarian, “ as we are n o t go ing to get back to residential service today.
