Wascos to vote this month for new Chief

over 1,100, are on the reservation,
while about 440 are o ff reservation

nity garden,” Smith was saying
recently, “because I thou g h t it

area, and in the first year received
perm ission to use a fire hydrant for
water. This proved to be trouble
some for the H ousing D epartm ent’s

for a w ater supply had to be ex
plored.

Tribal Council posted the p ro
posed 2013 tribal budget on Sept.
21. T he proposal includes a p ro
jected decrease o f nearly $2.29 mil
lion from the 2012 tribal budget.
T he budget reduction is the re
sult o f a decline in enterprise divi
dends to the tribes and settlement
income, said tribal Secretary-Trea
surer Charles Jody Calica. In his
budget message, S-T Calica states:
“W hen the Tribal Council takes
action to finalize the 2013 tribal
budget, total proposed expenditures
will n o t be increased beyond this
proposal. I f current econom ic con
ditions continue into 2014, it will be
probable that expenditure reductions
will be m ade to keep the budget in
balance.”
T he Agency D istrict has a m eet
ing regarding the budget scheduled
fo r M o n d ay e v e n in g , O c t. 9.

scheduled for Tuesday evening, Oct.
10. The Simnasho D istrict meeting
h a d rio t yet been set at press time.
A final budget will not be adopted
until m em bers have had a chance
to com m ent at these and other pub
lic meetings. (See the proposed budget
on pages 14 and 15 of this publication.)
Telecom cable
project near done
T he W arm Springs Telecom is

cable.
T he cable will provide for m uch
stronger Internet and voice service,
said T e le c o m m a n a g e r Jo s e
Matanane. T he 7.3 miles o f under
g ro u n d cable is going from the
Telecom office to Eagle Butte. The
contractor has been working on the
project for about 45 days, w ith just
a week or so left to go.
T he Telecom had been using a
point-to-point connection. The cable
will be a great im provem ent, as a
large volum e o f in fo rm a tio n —
fro m N etflix, distance learning,
voice and other data— is m oving
over the Internet, said Matanane.
C o s t o f th e n ew ca b le is
$354,000. T he Telecom now has
over 300 custom ers, including In
dian H ead Casino.
