In some hard-hit lakes, bi ologists have used an organic com pound that deprives fish o f oxygen to eradicate pike. T hey're also exploring the best uses for a tool similar to a high-pressure water gun and an o th er device th a t w orks like a low -voltage electric W T 7 /H. fence. N orthern pike prefer shal low, vegetated waters where they can hide and am bush pray. They’re native to some parts o f the state, but they’ve been introduced to waterways in south-central Alaska since the 1950s. In the area’s shal low waters, native water Spe cies can’t dive deep to escape and hav en ’t evolved o th er defenses against the pike. T h e fish h av e p o in te d snouts with teeth, and they have a capacity to devour a large am ount o f prey, K en Marsh, a spokesman for the Alaska D epartm ent o f Fish and Game, said. “T hey will literally, and have literally, in scores o f lakes in the valley, eat every rainbow trout, every salmon in sight,” M arsh said. “A nd th ey ’ve actually eradicated rain b o w tro u t fro m m any lakes where they used to be native and abundant.” N orthern pike also prey on water fowl, especially chicks, and amphibians. cHEVRDteT $ SUZUKI TOYOTA subarli Serving Centrai Oregon Community ~ Warm Springs You need to get beck on the road call Oscar's Expert Auto Repair.
