A message from the JCSD 509-J School Board
It’s been a big month for our school district and on behalf
of the school board, I’d like to share some highlights with our
families and community members.
You’ve probably heard that last month’s board meeting
brought some exciting news that will impact all of us. Here’s a
quick summary of what’s going on:
■ Our board voted 4-0 to accept the recommendation of a
community facilities committee to put a $26.7 million bond measure on the May ballot.
If the community votes to pass the ballot it will provide:

■ Our Classified staff ratified, and the board approved, a three-year contract.
■ We received the results of our recent financial audit and we continue to make financial
decisions that will help us maintain our support for students, families, employees and
community members.
In spite of everything that’s going on around us, our teachers and staff continue to focus on
engaging students and improving learning. While we were disappointed by the recent news of
our decrease in graduation rates, we believe that our current efforts in the classroom will have
a significant impact on the future success and continuing education of our students.
Thank you all for your on-going support. Please don’t hesitate to contact me, or the other
school board members, to discuss the bond measure or any other questions you have about the
district. We will continue to keep you informed about important issues that affect our schools.
— Brad Holliday, Chairman, JCSD 509-J School Board
“Our classified staff demonstrated a remarkable commitment to our students
and schools with the ratification o f a three-year contract. They really stepped
up to support the district during challenging economic times.”

Come Read to our Students!
Madras Primary needs adults who can read
to our students for ten to fifteen minutes each
month. Whether you are a parent, grandparent,
aunt, uncle or community member, we would
love to have you come read a book to one of our
classrooms. You can volunteer to come in every
month or just one time, whatever works best for
your schedule.
If you would like to be a guest reader please
contact the office at (541) 475-3520. Thank you
and we look forward to seeing you!
