E Coosh EE W A : The W3y it is Pgge 4 Spilydy Tymoo January 25, 2012 speaking the Letters to the Editor Truth By D uran Bobb New Year Defamation. Slander. Libel. D efam ation is the issuance o f a false statem ent about an other person, which causes that person to suffer harm. S lan d er in v o lv es m ak in g d e fa m a to ry speeches by non- ( 'I Spilyay fixed representa tion. Speaks Libel is when \________ X defamatory state m ents are prin ted in a fixed medium such as a newspaper or magazine. T he speed o f com m unica tion today can be either a bless ing or a curse. In the past few days, a for ward was started by an unknown individual. It contained a shock ing image along w ith a brief description regarding a tribal member. The news spread like wildfire, o u t o f control on Facebook, emails, cell phone multimedia messages. T he Tymoo investigated the forw ard and fo u n d th a t the image was n o t authentic, and the inform ation provided was false. “I deleted that forward,” D ot Shadley said. “First, it’s none o f my business. Second, why would I w ant to spread another p erson’s dirty laundry? A nd third, whoever started that mes sage, I really do pray for them.” “I didn’t pay attention to it,” said M artiR ai Wells-Ramsey. “The only way these types o f messages can do damage is if we partake.” F or this sam e reason, the Tymoo is unable to publish let ters which attack an individual, w ithout investigating and giving the other party an equal Oppor tunity to respond. Every tribal member has the right to freedom o f speech, the right to an opinion. However, every tribal mem ber also has the right to live free in the light o f truth, safe from emotional and mental harm. I f a statem ent is made at a public meeting for example, and it is found to be based on mis in fo rm a tio n - this may take away from the credibility o f a group. Within that same group, an individual may have a concern that they have researched. That voice may n ot get the volume it might otherwise deserve. The reservation community has been raised on the persever ance o f tribal elders. They gave the people much to be thankful for in a positive way. We can use this strength to enforce the bond o f our community family. O n behalf o f the Simnasho com m unity we w ould like to th an k everyone w ho h elped make the New Year’s Eve Pow Wow a great time. W hat a wonderful feeling it was to see all the people come to join us at the longhouse as we welcomed the calendar new year. W hat a sight it was to see the longhouse full as we song the songs at midnight. We want to thank: •The men who came to open the floor with the one seven and for Jode Goudy who picked up the bell and gave such wonder ful words during the service. • T he big drum s o f Eagle Thunder and Wawokya for pro viding the songs for the pow wow •To our boss from the north end for the cash donation that was shared with the dancers and singers • To Charlotte for the dona tion o f toys and “pop money” that was shared with the kids • F or Miss W arm Springs Tamera M oody for joining us for the evening • To Mr. Jaco b F rank for continuing to teach us the song that is to be song at this time o f the year. •To our “clown dancers” for coming to lighten to moment. • To all those that brought food for the dinner. We have tried to carry on the teachings o f the elders o f our longhouse. We come together to dance and celebrate for the joy o f dancing and singing. It is our hope that w hat we are do ing would bring smiles to the faces o f those that taught us this way. Again thank you to everyone and “H appy N ew Year, N ew Year, N ew Year.” Captain Round Dance O n behalf o f our family and com m unity we w ould like to everyone who helped make the Fourth Annual E n d o f the Year Round D ance possible. A s w e p re p a re d fo r th e evening’s meal it began to snow, and snow hard! We thought the w eather and road conditions would have scared people away b u t it didn’t as we filled the longhouse up w ith participants. T h ro u g h o u t th e evening, as some people would leave, oth ers would come in the door. At evening’s end we still had a good num ber o f people present. We are very appreciative to Mr. Carlos Calica for carrying th e d u ties o f MC fo r th e evening. No comment I f we w ant to stay o u t o f trouble, our statement o f words should be “no comment.” I learned that we should say “no com m ent” from another head-injured friend in Eugene. W hen I first heard that state ment, I sure did giggle a lot, but when you really think about it, it can be the true thing to say to stay out o f trouble. My friend that I learned that no-com m ent statement from is n ot here on earth anymore, but I will always rem em b er this friend w ith the n o-com m ent statement. I learned that the prescribed medications he had to take is w hat ended this friend’s life. That means we should also be very aware arid careful o f the prescribed meds we have to take too. I know I don’t drink any al cohol drinks and listen to what your MD says. May this New Year o f 2012 be good for you all in Warm Springs. Police T he directive to the Warm Springs Police officers is that it is our job to make the commu nity safe through enforcing all trial laws and traffic codes. In the past m onth, tribal po lice have initiated 379 traffic stops. Officer John Wallace is the Traffic O fficer for Warm Springs. Some o f the reasons folks are stopped include defective equipment, failure to maintain a lane o f travel, speeding, fail ing to stop at stop signs, erratic driving, seat belt problems, fail ure to use turn signals, stopping or standing in the roadway. These are some o f the mi nor things that officers look for as they are patrolling. In m ost cases, if it is the first time a person is stopped, driv ers will get a warning. Keeping the community safe involves the task o f keeping the road free o f drunk drivers. We are consistent in stopping and arresting drunk drivers. We also ensure that vehicles are safe and are in proper work ing order, and that drivers obey all traffic laws. W hen stopped W hen a driver is stopped, Warm Springs Police are better able to do their job if a driver follows certain steps. The person should pull off the side o f the road in a safe area. The driver should not stop in the middle o f the road when they see the emergency lights come on. The driver should roll down the window so the officer can speak with them, and so the of ficer can see inside. I f the car w in d o w s are tin te d o r o b structed in any way, for the ve hicle occupants’ safety and the officer’s safety, the driver should roll all the windows down. T he driver should rem ain calm and seated. Any movement inside the vehicle could be taken as a threat, and the driver could possibly be ordered out o f the vehicle by gun point. The rea son for this is officers have been killed on traffic stops. The community can help the police by reporting drunk driv ers, drivers driving erratically, drivers who are speeding, and vehicles on the roadway that present a hazard to other driv ers. W hen reporting, try to give the best description possible o f th e v eh icle. In c lu d e m ake, model, color, license plate num ber, decals and damage.
