Spilyay Tym oo, Wacm Springs, O regon Page 3 January 11, 2012 Birthday Bash for Elvis Tribes to host Timber Council in the spring Warm Springs in 2012 will host the annual meeting of the Intertribal Tim ber Coun cil. Thé council is a nation wide consortium o f Indian tribes, Native Alaska corpo rations, and individuals dedi cated to improving the man agement o f natural resources o f im p o rta n c e to N ativ e communities. W arm Springs will host the annual meeting in May at Kah-Nee-Ta. This will be the first tim e th e tribes have hosted the conference since the mid-1990s, said O rvie Danzuka, o f tribal N atural Resources. Staff are currently work ing on items that will be on the agenda during the May gathering, said Danzuka. S ta ff fro m th e N u tritio n D epartm ent and C om m unity Counseling grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches for ev eryone. “Those were Elvis’ favorite,” announced Rosemary Lewis. Prizes were awarded to the top three contestants in dance and sing alike contests, and top three contestants in each age group for the look alike con test. Pastor Rick Ribeiro de fended his title as best Elvis sing-alike, p erform ing “Love Me Tender.” Poncho Medina slicked his hair back and did a Elvis shake to take hom e the title o f best Elvis look-alike. Over 60 tribes and Alaska N ativ e co rp o ra tio n s c u r rently belong to the ITC , which has the stated purposes of: P rom oting sound, eco nom ic m anagem ent o f In dian forests; facilitating com m unication; collaborating with the BIA and others in terested in im proving the management o f Indian natu ral resources; helping estab lish natural resource-based business enterprises; and en couraging the training and development o f Indian for esters. Unlike most American communities, only approximately 60 per cent o f reservation residents have access to basic tele phone service, and less than 30 percent have D SL ser vice. Until last year, there had been no television or cable TV services available on the reservation. Oregon Public Broadcasting recently put up a new translater on the res ervation enabling residents to receive the first “off-air” television network. Under the aegis o f Warm Springs Ventures, the eco nomic development corpora tion o f the tribes, tribal lead- ers has been working on this project for m ore than five years, J e ff A nspach, chief ex ecutive officer Warm Springs Telecom explained, ‘Ventures is an ‘incubator’ that works to create new business oppor tunities for the Tribes.” A fter receiving planning dollars from federal agen cies, Rural U tility Service an d E c o n o m ic D e v e lo p m e n t A sso ciatio n , W arm Springs Telecom received $5.6 m illio n fro m th e ARRA B roadband Stimulus F und in 2010.
