n r E Coosh EEWA: The wgy it is Plaza ideas By D uran Bobb The Warm Springs Economic Development Corp., known also as Warm Springs Ventures, has moved from the Plaza to the newly-designed Construction office located in the Industrial Park. “The reason we moved out was to give small business an opportunity to get close to the mar \ ket the casino will S p ilya y be creating,” Jeff S p ea k s v_______________ y Anspach said. T he P laza space occupied by Ventures will now be rem odeled into two units. One unit will be rented to Kah-Nee-Ta once the new In dian Head Casino opens. There are several applicants interested in the remaining unit. This area will be a prime lo cation for any small business, once the casino opens. There will be a boom in foot traffic at the Plaza unlike any previously seen on the reservation. “Over the years, we’ve lost m oney just m ain tain in g the building and trying to find ten ants. Then we have to try to keep those businesses open and have had a hard time figuring out how to get traffic to stop. But I think those days are fi nally behind us.” Tribal members have ideas of the types of businesses they would like to see open at the Plaza. “If you think about it, there’s a pawn shop within a mile of any other casino.” “At the casino, it’s bells and whistles and noises. I think people come looking for Native American items locally-made. This would give visitors the In dian experience.” “It would be nice to see a salon,” N atalie M oody said. “Many young ladies have fin ished school for this, but they have nowhere to set up shop.” Yvette Leecy would like to see a music store open. Another tribal member said, ‘Whatever business opens in the available space, I think it would mean more to both locals and visitors if the owners keep de p en d ab le, regu lar bu siness hours.” ___TOE NESS... The M useum at W arm Springs A thank you A big thank you is long over due to those who have helped me by providing firewood. Thank you, Dempsey Polk and his children, Tiger VanPelt and his crew, and Mallory Gil bert and her husband for their help in splitting the blocks. The Senior Program wasn’t able to provide me with fire wood, and your help has meant a lot to me. I would also like to say thank you to all of the people who helped me when the horrible fire burned through the area around my home. My neighbor and nephew Dennis Thompson and his friend raced to my house to turn on my water before the fire crews arrived. They also came after the fire fighters left to put out the smoldering ashes. Thank you, everybody, for your concern and for calling to check on me. M axine M cK in ley and family. The Bullying Prevention Committee, a sub-committee of the Jefferson County Pre vention Task Force, pur chased bullying prevention books to donate to the local libraries as a resource for the community. This was done to continue the awareness campaign on bullying that the committee has been working on. The group wanted parents and children to have a place where they could check out resource books if they were interested. Seven books by Oregon author Trudy Ludwig were donated to the Jefferso n County Library, and the same seven books were donated to the Warm Springs Library. W ell, another year has come and gone, just in the blink of an eye! I’m talking about Hood to Coast... We had another fine year and another fine team, but every thing went by too fast! We went slightly over our anticipated time of 29 hours and some odd minutes. I think they finally got it done in 31 hours 45 minutes or some thing like that. All in all, it was a year to be rem em bered. Many couldn’t focus totally on their running, due to the fire at home. Everyone came back and there was still the worry of homes being threat ened. But it was a year of hope o f w hat could have been. The team members were: M onica Sam pson, Jo rd an Leonard, Leslie Davis, Jayme Schricker, Hailey Brownson, Ina Schuster, Ryan Smith, Lex Anguiano, Jason Smardowit, Adam Haas, Douglas Rector, and D on C ourtney. B ig ‘thank you’ to Don and Dou glas for being our last minute recruits. Congratulations to Jordan for being our young est; it will be a year to re member for her! It was her first year, her “break-in” year. We had several rookies this year, besides Jordan. Con gratulations to Ryan, Dou glas, Hailey, Jayme and Adam (all except for Ryan and Hailey have run HTC before, but not with our team). We still consider them rookies... As always, we must thank our sponsors: Warm Springs Composite Products, Kah- Nee-Ta High Desert Resort & Casino, Brunoe Logging and Warm Springs Market. We couldn’t have done it without your support and as sistance. Also, many, many thanks to our families and friends that were there to support us during our training; al ways, always training. They were there for us during our times of great stress of “can I do this?” or “Lord, help me get through this”; always by our side, cheering us on and giving us the boost we needed. We alw ays need your moral support, so thank you all for giving us that! Be look ing for us again in 2012, we’ll be doing our fund-raising and getting ready for next year. Val Squiemphen, “Res ervation Runners” To fire fighters More wishes... We would like to thank all the fire fighters that saved our home and animals up at Sidwalter Ca nal Road. That was a close one!
