This would involve improve ments such as weatherization, and changing existing light bulbs to more energy-efficient ones. Tribal grant development di rector Jolene Estimo is in the process of hiring an energy ef ficiency coordinator. This is a one-year position, full time. The W arm Springs E nergy E ffi ciency Green Team will then work with the intern to develop an energy efficiency plan. The plan would include an inventory of tribal facilities and their energy usage. The inven tory will lead to energy effi ciency proposals, which could be funded through grants. This would create employment while saving on energy costs to the tribes, Estimo said. Last week, the tribes hosted a tour of tribal buildings. On the tour were Tertia Speiser of the U.S. D epartm ent o f En ergy representative, program specialist Pete Gingrass, and Lyn Schm idt o f the E nergy Trust of Oregon. They visited the clinic, and the community center, among other buildings that could be made more energy efficient. They also visited the media cen ter, which is powered in part by solar panels. The tour group also met with Thank you from graduate - ses» At graduation: Thomas Medina, Alison Medina, Sophie Medina, Mayanne Mitchell, Alena Mitchell, Allen Mitchell, Jada Medina, Margaret Switzler, and Evelyn Aguilar (from left). Certain minimum pay ment levels, and buy-American provisions, for instance, are re quirements. There are 89 public buildings that the tribes oversee, so the potential savings through energy efficiency is significant, Estimo said. Public Utilities is the lead department in maintaining the buildings. The long-term goal is gener ate a 25-percent energy savings through efficiency projects, Estimo said. — M y nam e is A llen Mitchell.
