r 1 Spilygy Tymoo, Wgrrn Springs, Oregon Youth build friendship on reservation B y Duran Bobb Spi/yay Tymoo Sometimes, groups of people don’t get along because they don’t know each very well. The island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, for instance, is divided between Greek and Turkish residents. And at times the two cultures don’t get along. The Cyprus Friendship'Foun dation was created to remedy the situation. The group v isited W arm Springs earlier this month. Par ticipants of the Cyprus Friend ship Program came to the res ervation to learn more about Native Americans and culture. The program is helping to build friendships between the Greek and Turkish speaking teens from Cyprus, located in the Mediterranean just under Tur key. “Battles on that island left it partitioned,” Portland Area pro gram coordinator Cheron Calder said. “The south part of the is land is Greek. “The north is Page 3 July 27, 2011 Duran Bobb/Spilyay The Greek and Turkish youth toured the Museum at Warm Springs, among other places on the reservation. Turkish. The area was divided, complete with landmines and guard towers, so it was a true division.” She said, “This program pairs the teens together. They go through team- and trust-build ing activities together. Then, they come to the United States for a one-month stay with an American host family.” While they’re in the U.S., the They came to Warm Springs to better understand the cultural diversity that exists in the nation... teens share a room for the sum mer and become friends for life. “They’ll go on service-learn ing opportunities, building their skills in environmental aware ness. So when they go home, they’ll work together. Our hope is that when they invite their friends and fam ily together, they’ll work as a group planting trees or doing some environ mental restoration work, and that benefits everybody.” The Cyprus Friendship Pro gram decided to bring the group to Warm Springs to better un derstand the cultural diversity that exists in the nation. “They have never seen any thing like the tribes here,” Calder said. “So we’re honored for the chance to experience this, and we are grateful that Aurolyn Stwyer-Pinkham was able to ar range for us to see the traditional dancers.” While in Warm Springs, the group also learned to bead neck laces at the Museum at Warm Springs. They held a pool party at Kah-Nee-Ta, and learned the history of the rock formations.
