This week the bull trout are b e in g re le a se d in to th e Clackam as R iver on the Mt. H ood National Forest. The release event is sched uled for 1-2 p.m. on Thursday, June 30. The site is 45 miles east o f the town o f Estacada. Prior to the releases o f bull trout there will be several short streamside presentations or op portunities to speak by represen tatives from the primary agen cies implementing this action. The tribes, PG E , the Oregon D epartm ent o f Fish and Wild life, the U.S. Forest Service and the N ational Marine Fisheries Service are participating. T he réin tro d u c tio n o f the treatened bull trout is being done p u rsu a n t to the E n d a n g e re d Species Act. The Clackamas réintroduc tion is part o f a broad strategy to restore the fish to their his toric habitat. Bull trout from a wild healthy population in the Metolius River are being used for the Clackamas project. Biologists will release five to 10 adult bull trout at the event release site. Up to 50 additional adult bull trout may be released that day or subsequent days at o th e r locations in th e u p p er Clackamas River consistent with our strategy to disperse the re leases. While this event highlights re- in tro d u ctio n o f the initial 60 adult fish, the long term strat egy also includes reintroducing about 1,000 juvenile bull trout annually for seven to 15 years. While threatened bull trout are native to numerous N o rth western rivers, the last known Clackamas bull trout was docu mented nearly five decades ago. The goal o f this effort is to re establish a self-sustaining popu lation o f 300-500 adults within 20 years. The réintroduction is part o f a multi-state recovery strategy. This réintroduction may lead to other similar efforts to eventu ally reconnect fragmented popu lations o f bull trout throughout O re g o n , W ashington, Idaho, M ontana, and Nevada.
