The ATM will begin as a with- draw als-only device and be available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be inside the foyer o f the credit office, which is located across the street from the tribes’ administration building. People on the reservation who need some cash before or after work will be able to get it once the machine is up and run ning. And if they are credit union members they’ll be able to do so without extra fees. “It’s going to save people so much time and money,” said Lori Fuentes, credit manager. Another anticipated dividend: “It could help the local economy by keeping money here on the reservation,” Fuentes said. Many residents currently make cash withdrawals in Ma dras at the credit union’s office there, for example. They end up spending money off the reser vation because they are near a large number of stores, services and restaurants. N ot having to leave Warm Springs to obtain cash should encourage more spending near home, she said. Operation hours for the ma chine eventually could increase if customer demand warrants it, Fuentes said. Cash machines or electronic withdrawals are available at a few other locations around the reservation. Using them, how ever, costs more money because people are charged each time by their own financial institution and the company that owns the machine. The m useum will be closed to the public Sundays and Mondays until April 1, 2010. Fuentes said she also hopes that having the ATM available will encourage more tribal mem bers to join the credit union, which is in many cases is less expensive than using a bank. Many people on the reserva tion don’t have any bank or credit union accounts at all. Having a credit union account can be less cosfiy than paying a business to cash a check. “It also encourages saving,” she added. Currently, the tribe’s credit enterprise will cash checks but only if they are being used to pay a loan. The customer gets back the remainder. Partnership between the tribe and Mid Oregon also includes the introduction of state-of-the- art equipment for check cash ing, check scanning, and cash for deposits that should be operat ing in the spring. Tribal elections Letters are being sent out to tribal members who are 21 years old, specifi cally to those b o rn in 1988. The letters are be ing sent so the individuals can select their voting dis tricts: Agency, Seekseequa or Simnasho. Please return the letters to Vital Statistics. If you did not receive a letter, call Vital Statistics Office at 541-553-3252.
