But they weren’t preparing to w ork w ith food; they were conducting a science experiment. Similar experiments were car ried out all around the multipur pose room at Jefferson County Middle School one recent N o vember evening. And, n o t as visible at first glance, piles o f pennies w ere stacked around the table. The idea was to use the foil to create a strong vessel to float the pennies in the wa ter. N o glue, tape, or cutting was permitted in designing the boats. Only folding the foil into differ ent shapes was allowed. Engi neering skills were key because the m ost resilient style boat was the one that held the m ost pen nies. A younger boy watched care fully as m iddle sch o o l girls placed bottles on both sides and tried to make the scale balance. It was a physics lesson to il lustrate the concept o f size vs. weight. To be exact, it’s a mass balancing experiment, explained N ia T om and C irelle Frank. B oth are in 7th grade at the middle school and from Warm Springs. T he project is an on-going effort coordinated by the Co lumbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Authority (CBFWA), with col la b o ra tio n fro m n u m e ro u s tribal, state and federal agencies. Funding was provided by the Bonneville Power Administra tion as part o f the N orthw est P o w er an d C o n se rv a tio n Council’s Fish and Wildlife Pro gram that helps mitigate im pacts to fish an d w ildlife caused by the operation o f the Federal Columbia River Power System. The report was developed in collaboration w ith BPA and the council to provide an easy-to-read guidebook on the annual status and results o f mitigation efforts in the Columbia River Basin. The CBFWA, which de veloped the report, was char tered in 1987 to coordinate ongoing efforts to p ro tect and enhance the fish and wildlife resources o f the Co lumbia River Basin. Members o f the CBFWA include th e C o n fed erated T ribes o f W arm S prings, B urns Paiute tribe, C oeur d’Alene, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
