E Coosh EEWA: The W3y it is New staff members join Spilyay By Duran Bobb Driving down the grade into Warm Springs, the temperature is no longer 109-degrees. Air conditioners have been popped out of windows. Snow has al ready fallen once. There’s frost on the Spilyay g round, some Speaks mornings. And the leaves have surren dered their green to richer spectrum. There’s a change in the air in Warm Springs, you can feel it. At a recent General Council meeting, one of our tribal elders spoke of change and how im portant it was for our tribal members to “stay Indian” in this day and age of computers and cell phones. There are changes taking place at the Spilyay Tymoo of fice, as well. For months now, the Spilyay has been under staffed. But now there are additions to the news paper staff. • Joining us from the Los An geles area, Terri Harber is an experienced reporter, having worked for the past 6 years for the Nevada Appeal in Carson City. Terri has been trained as both a reporter and a page de signer. She attended Long Beach State (CSULB) and says that one of the main reasons why she chose to come to work in Warm Springs was to learn more about the Native American culture. “The people that I’ve met so far have been open and friendly,” Terri said. 'If" you happen to see Terri out and about in our commu nity, please extend her a reser vation welcome. “Some people enjoy my quirkiness,” Terri says. With her bubbly personality and her sense of curiosity, Terri is sure to be a familiar face in Warm Springs in no time. I’m also joining the Spilyay staff. My name is Duran Bobb, and most of you know me from either the radio stations (KWSI and KWSO) or from Cultural Resources, where I was the Oral History Supervisor. My Indian name is Skw’lilapt (Whirlwind). I attended Heritage University in Toppenish, Wash., where I majored in English, and COCC (Psychology). I have worked closely with tribal elders in the past, and look forward to the new challenges that the newspaper has to offer me. Other staff members here at the Spilyay Tymoo include Sam Howard, who is the advertising manager, and Bill Rhoades, our media advisor. Page 4- Spilyay Tymoo November 5, 20 09 Letters to the Editor 33rd tourney I am a member o f the Warm Springs Indian Holiday Bowling Tournam ent Committee. We hold our annual tournam ent during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend; this year marks our 33rd Annual held at Lava Lanes in Bend. We have grow n trem en dously over the last few years with bowlers coming to partici pate in our tournament from all over the U.S. Those bowlers that finish at the top o f their division are awarded a championship jacket and cash. It is through the gen erosity of individuals and com panies that make the jackets possible. These jackets are worn with pride, to other various tourna ments that these champions par ticipate in on the circuit. I can personally attest to this, as I am an avid bowler, traveling to other tournaments, and I see those jackets. We are currendy seeking do nations to assist in purchasing these jackets. The donation re quest is for $75, but any amount or contribution is most welcome and appreciated. Should you honor our request, your name or company name will be em broidered on the jackets as the sponsor of that championship jacket. I would truly appreciate what ever you can give and Ik n o w the “Champions” will too. Thank you for your time and consider ation in this matter. Respectfully, Kenneth Keno Tuckta, 325-1547. Once again, thank you. If I forgot anyone, you will always remember what you’ve done for us— setting camp, cleaning, and everything. Special thanks to our little brother Fred Hill for be ing our M. A thank you The Warm Springs Victims of Crime Services would like to thank K en Clark o f Madras, and Gerrit and Darcy Southard for their donations of clothing and kitchen goods. It means a lot to the VOCS clients who are affected by the stress o f domestic violence, sexual violence, or other trau matic experiences, when they need adult and children’s clothes, or d o n ated h o u seh o ld and kitchen goods. Please keep the VOCS pro gram in mind in this winter and spring for other small donations; especially items such as coats, sweatshirts, and hats. Thanks again, Mark M atthews, VOCS program manager. What a ride To all my family and friends I send greetings and my love. Thanks for everything. I love you all. Take care and know you are all in m yj prayers and thoughts... I wrote the follow ing thinking of all we have lost. I really hope you like it. Peace to all. When we bury someone we love we must also bury a part of our hearts. But we should not mourn this loss. For our hearts, perhaps, are all they can take with them. They are not gone who live in the hearts of those, they must leave behind. For life is a gift that must be given back and joy should arise from its pos sessions. It’s too damn short and that’s a fact, because it is hard to accept this earthly procession to a final darkness, for it is a journey done circle complete, a work of art, a sweet new song with a joyful melody, a nice rhyme, a batde won and soon lost over time. For death is no fearsome mystery, for it is well known to both you and me. It has no secrets it can keep to trouble a good man’s sleep. So turn not your face from death, for today he cares not that he takes our breath away. And fear him not for he is not our mas ter rushing at us faster and faster, as he is not our master but* a servant to our Creator. What or who created death also created you and me and that, my friend, is the only mystery as we race to death’s final em brace with a beautiful and easy grace, because life is not a jour ney to the grave with the inten tion o f arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body... but rather to skid in broadside, thor oughly used up and totally worn out and loudly proclaiming— Wow, what a ride!
