Edmund Francis. W.S. beauties D ust rose from their hooves o f thunders, as I watched them race on by, buckskins, paints and appaloosas, and that stormy, painted sky. Sleek and handsom e w ere their bodies, muscles rippling in the sun, without riders were these horses, They were racing just for run. In a w indstorm they were running on a hillside so close by ‘twas a scene I ’ll long remem ber, and a pleasure to my eyes. Eino To my sister W hen we were young, you were the little— I was the tom boy. We started going to Washut services at the old Sim nasho longhouse, it was to always be an im portant part o f our life. W h en w e w e n t to g rad e school, I fought anyone w ho made fun o f you. We had to go to boarding school. We stuck close together. We would find things to laugh about, things no one else would think was funny. We w ere always g e ttin g in trouble together. We danced at powwows and fought over who should ask a boy to Owl Dance. We w ent o ff to relatives in the summer, you to Nespeleem, me to Gresham. We g ot baptized together in the Catholic Church when I was 12, you w ere 10. As we g o t older, we started the sum m er going to catechism classes. Then we g o t taken o u t early to go berry picking. We had many berry fights, we got into trouble for climbing Jake H ardwigs cherry tree to swipe cherries. We would dress up on Satur day, take a bus to Gresham, eat pork noodles at the Chinese res taurant, go to the movies and w atch “Elvis Presley” movies until they kicked us out. We enjoyed riding ou r pet horse “shorty.” We joined the “B oot and Saddle Club.” We rode the horses from our A unt’s place to H eH e every summer. We learned to dog paddle and eventually sw im in P o d d ers Pond. We played sports together, softball, basketball, volleyball... you were the one who excelled in sports, I got to be the bench warmer, the bat girl. We were on the drill team, we got to m arch in the Rose Pa rade. We babysat many kids in Warm Springs together. People gave us nicknam es like, g asoline an d k ero sen e, Bobsy twins, just like a horse and carriage... because we were always together. I was jealous because you did all your homework in study hall. I had to lug all my books hom e and study for hours. A fter I graduated from high school, we started on our own journeys. I traveled a lot and you stayed close to home. Spilyay Tym oo (Coyote News, Est. 1976) Publisher Emeritus: Sid Miller Editor: Dave McMechan Management Successor: Selena T.
