Inspiration comes from my g re a t-g ra n d m o th e r Ju lia W hitew olfe-C ow poo (Katsa), her detailed work has challenged m e to continue the skilled work o f old. I am th e only b ead worker in my immediate family and believe I should leave my work for others to be challenged like my great-grandmother and her sisters did. W hen I sit down and start a project I usually have one or two objects, but as I finish the two, another detail in my work is created... like the designs in the skyline or the landscape. I listen to m y th o u g h ts: H ow would Katsa do this, never take a short cut, do the best I can, and remember the future. O ur future will look at our w ork and maybe they will say what I said to myself, “I ’m go ing to bead like that!” (Note: Marjorie Kalama re cently finished a beaded bag [right] featuring Warm Springs C hief Delvis Heath. She donated the bag to the Museum at Warm Springs fo r their annual Huckleberry H ar vestfundraiser.. Thefollowing is her artist’s statement.) My m o th e r, Je a n n ie Halfmoon-Danzuka, taught me how to loom when I was in high school. I began collecting beads not really having a project, but I h ad a plan th a t one day I would use all my beads. Since my m om ’s training I have taught myself the peyote stitch, flat work, and continue to loom. I then learned how to tie feather’s from Ivan Gabriel, for w hom I beaded a full tradi tional m en’s regalia and acces sories. I finished full beaded fancy dance regalia and started traditional regalia both are fea tured at the Kah-Nee-Ta Lodge show case.
