H ow can I be so lucky? B ut wait a m inute, I d o n ’t knpw M atthew WilEams. Why would he leave me $5.1 miEion doEars? Obviously, this was a scam. I was d eletin g th is em ail w hen Juanita VEla, one o f our information. W hat they w ant are account numbers, passwords, Social Se curity numbers, and other con fidential inform ation that they can use to loot our checking ac counts or ru n up biEs on our credit cards. This is a type o f “Phishing.” A c c o rd in g to W ik ip ed ia, “P h ish in g ” is th e crim inally fraudulent process o f attem pt ing to acquire sensitive informa tion such as usernames, pass words, and credit card detaEs, or personal identification inform a tion by masquerading as a trust w orthy entity in an electronic communication. “I f you don’t know w ho is sending you an emaE, then you should delete it,” advises Todd Sturm o f the tribes’ EagleTech co -w o rk ers, sh o w ed u s h e r em ail I n f o r m a tio n S y stem s o f fic e .,,.j that said the same thing. I f you provide the requested inform ation, you may find yourself the victim o f identity theft. Protect yourself from crimi ---------------------- - tible to increased injury to the fe e t su ch as p u n c tu re wounds, cuts, lacerations and burns to the bottom o f the feet th a t can o c c u r from walking on h o t surfaces. I t is recom m ended that diabetic patients always use a shoe covering and th a t it should be firm to especiaEy p ro tect the b o tto m o f the feet from skin w ounds and burns from h o t sidewalks and road surfaces. U se b each shoes w hile walking on sand and in the ocean (hot sand causes bums, seasheEs may lead to punc ture wounds), and never walk barefoot especiaEy o n h o t road and sidewalk surfaces. Lastly, stay hydrated, drink p len ty o f w ater, m o n ito r b lo o d su g ars a n d avoid simple sugars such as sodas and sweetened juices. N ever provide your pass w ord over the phone or in re s p o n s e to an u n s o lic ite d Internet request. A financial in stitution would never ask you to verify your account inform ation online. Thieves arm ed w ith this inform ation and your account num ber can help themselves to your savings. 3. Always review acco u n t statements regularly to ensure aE charges are correct. I f your ac count statem ent is late in arriv ing, caE your financial institution to find o ut why. I f your finan- cial instixutjon offers electronic, account access, periodicaUy re view activity online to catch sus picious activity. There are precautions that people with diabetes can use to significantly decrease risk o f h arm to' their feet and other areas o f the body. N ote that severe foot in jury can cause serious infec tion, if left untreated can lead to am putation and at the ex treme, loss o f Efe. Protection from the sun, by using a hat, sun glasses and skin block, even on the feet for b oth the UVA and UVB are im portant, simple inter ventions that can avoid severe bum and decrease risk o f skin cancers and eye injury. It is im portant to rem em ber that people with diabe tes often have decreased sen sation, losing the abiEty to feel pain as they used to.
