Filmmaker visits Warm Springs for video project
Filmmaker Dustin Craig and
his sound man Gene Declay
were in Warm Springs recently;
working on a law enforcement
training video.
Craig is an independent film
producer. H e directed the
Geronimo episode of the PBS
series We Shall Remain.
In Warm Springs he inter
viewed Nola Queahpama and
Lucinda Green about tribal cul
tural traditions.
The information from these
and other interviews will be
shared in the training video
with law enforcement officers
and investigators, such as the
FBI.
Dave McMechan/Spilyay
New officers hired to work
in Warm Springs could also ben
efit from the video.
Officers need to be aware of
tribal traditions during their re^
sponse .to criminal cases on the
reservation, said Sammy Bruised
Head, of Victims o f Crime Ser
vices.
Bruised Head assisted Craig
and Declay while they were in
Warm Springs.
N o la Q ueahpam a and
Lucinda Green were chosen for
the Warm Springs interviews
because of their experience in
advocacy and cultural knowl
edge, said Bruised Head.
Besides the Warm Springs
tribal members, the filmmakers
in terview ed Indians from
Choctaw, Miss., Pine Ridge,
South D akota, and Barrow,
Alaska.
T he video is being p ro
duced for Unified Solutions,
and will be about 30 minutes
in length.
The issue being addressed
happens when law enforcement
is called in to investigate a ma
jor crime such as homicide on
the reservation.
The goal is for the officers
to be aware of the cultural prac
tices while pursuing the investi
gation.

Smokey Bear says
please talk to your kids
about fireworks and safety.
The Fourth of July is
near, and that means pa
rades, barbecues, family
g et-to g eth e rs and o f
course fireworks.
Before all the celebrat
ing begins, please read and
follow these safety rules
that Smokey Bear and Fire
Management would like
everyone in the commu
nity to follow:
Be prepared... before
you light fireworks.
Purchase only legal
fireworks, available at li
censed firework stands.
Ensure the safety o f pets.
Keep a bucket of wa
ter handy in which to place
all used fireworks. Have a
water hose or fire extin
guisher nearby to put out
stray sparks.
Be safe... when light
ing fireworks:
Have an adult light all
fireworks. Light one fire
work at a time. Use fire
works only outdoors, away
from anything that can
burn.
Be responsible... after
you finish:
Be co n sid erate o f
neighbors. Clean up all
debris when finished. If a
firework does not light or
fire, an adult should wait
at least 15 minutes and ap
proach it carefully.
Make sure all unused
fireworks, matches and
fighters are out o f sight
and reach of children.
Have a happy Fourth
o f July and remember to
keep Smokey Bear from
becoming a grumpy Bear
by being prepared, being
safe and being responsible
with the use o f fireworks
this year.
