E veryone w as p retty bum m ed out b u t we have an opportunity to try again next year. We plan on doing just that. I did w ant to let everyone know that I have another team entered for 2009.1 have a team entered in the Portland to Coast High School Challenge. T he Portland to Coast is a little different than H o o d to Coast, in that they only run two legs instead o f three, b ut basi cally will be running the same course. I just wanted people to know that I have a high school team running this year. I am so proud o f them! I had runners turn me dow n because they didn’t want to run, b ut these kids have taken the bull by the horns and said “I am going to do this!” I h o p e ev ery o n e w ill be cheering them on and showing their support. Rodeo time This year the Pi-ume-sha All Indian Rodeo is going National. T he W arm Springs R odeo A ssociation, sanctioning w ith th e W e ste rn S tates In d ia n Rodeo Association, will sponsor an Indian National Finals Tour Rodeo. W hat that means is we will be seeing N ative contestants from across the Unites States and Canada n o t just the four Western States. We will be starting the rodeo slack oh Friday afternoon, June 26, at 4 p.m. and having a per formance on Saturday, June 27, and the top ten cowboys in the first round will compete on Sun day, June 28. This rodeo as a tour stop will help those cowboys earn points for the Indian National Finals Rodeo in one o f the top 10 Tour Standings to qualify for the Fi nals to be held in Las Vegas in November. In d ia n R o d eo h as co m e along way and is continuing to thrive in Warm Springs, as we are the only Indian reservation in the state to still sponsor an All Indian Rodeo. D ue to the economy and the lack o f interest in other Indian com m unities, they have com pletely disolved thier rodeos or have opened them up to any and all contestants. Warm Springs Rodeo Asso ciation works hard to sponsor the Pi-Ume-Sha All Indian Ro deo and also keep rodeo alive by bringing back the Youth Ro deo we held at R oot Feast, and by encouraging the youth in the Wild H orse Race competitions by holding a school hete and the professional team bronc riding competitions. T h e w estern en v iro n m en t that rodeo provides is alive and kickin’ in Warm Springs. Please come o ut and support n o t only your local contestants but watch and visit other native cowboys and cowgirls from other areas. Last b ut n ot least, the M em o rial D an ce c o n te s t in m em ory o f o u r beloved aunt Zelma Greene-Minthorn, which was done at the University o f O regon Powwow in Eugene this spring. This last year has been pretty busy for our family and I ap preciate all th e help th a t has stepped forward in order to help out our family members. A mil lion thanks to the drum m ers, singers and dancers w ho have made the trip to Siletz to honor the request o f our family from Lapwai. You all made the ser vices go beautifully and I know it made my aunt and her family feel the com fort you brought them considering the w eather that everyone had to travel in to get to Siletz. I would like the drummers that rode with Celia to know that everyone did pray so you have a safe trip hom e after that ride down to Siletz (we all knew you were safe with her d riv in g ). T o m y fam ily in Nespelem, I know that you are all doing okay and I pray for you daily as you continue your jour ney to healing and prepare for your memorial. We did a m em o rial d an ce sp e c ia l fo r atrijai Zelm a G reene-M intorn at the University o f O regon Powwow as it helped som e o f us w ho were unable to make it to her memorial in Lapwai and this was our release. The winners at the U. o f O. Powwow special were: first place, C harlene M oody from W arm S p rin g s; se c o n d p lace , w as B ernice Jim ; th ird place was E ile e n S p in o fro m W arm S p rin g s; fo u r th p lace w as Farrellyn Bellinger from Warm Springs; and Angie Sorrelhorse from P ortland (but originally from Warm Springs). Thanks to all the w om en dancers that par ticipated in this contest, you all made it successful and meaning ful to my family. The judges for this was contest were first place T o n i M. C o rd e ll a n d L isa M in th o rn , second place was K im b erly A llen a n d H o d a M in th o rn , th ird p la c e w as Bernie G reene Boise and Sarah Gonsalez, fourth place was the G ra n d D a u g h te rs fro m Pendleton and fifth place judges were Allie Smith and Veronica Baez. C arlos C alica and his drum group sang b oth contest songs and Fred Hill spoke for the family. Tom and Allison Ball were very instrumental in letting this take place and w ithout their treasures it would n ot have hap pened. Thank you my brother and sister. As we prepare for sum mer events and traveling, as this is a time to renew everything includ ing ourselves, I hope that every one will have a great year as many seasons are com ing up baseball, softball, powwows, ro deo, etc., and be safe as you travel to and from each activ ity. Take this opportunity to give thanks-for w hat you have, that you have survived w hatever hurdles you had to jump because it is a new season, new day and a new year for this season. To my children (all o f you and you know who I am talking to) I appreciate your help in everything that you have done not only for me b ut for other fam ily and friends. You will never forget the goodness you have done and just know I ap preciate you all and I will always wish you all the best in w hat ever you do (as long as it is le gal). H er grandchildren were great help, especially at the house. I was touched by the kindness o f the young daughter o f E ric, Brittney, who looked at me for a little while and then come and gave me a hug. I will rem ember that gesture always. Thanks to those who brought food to the house for the services. Sherry, D arlu, Roberta, Anna, Nancy, Tina Fuller, Butch Miller, Ada Billy, Mike and Kat, A nte and N ola are those that I know of, thanks to you and the others I failed to mention. Josie in R eno w ho was kind enough to help Deirdre and her sons make the trip, and thanks N ola for fixing up a bundle to send back to her. The drummers at the house and at the longhouse are appre ciated. Cyril and your boys, Lil Bull, and Sam are to be m en tioned. I know that there were those drummers who were ready but did not have a chance to pick up a drum. Thanks for being there. A nd thanks for the gals that helped at the house, Tina Spino,Tina Fuller, Sherry Smith, and Clarice Tewee. T hanks to the cooks w ho worked hard to keep the people fed. Basketball, baseball, H all o f Fame ideas fo r your consideration B y “Iso ” M ike Clem ents I resp ectfu lly in v ite th e tribal men folks to join me in some fun times in the near fu ture. I have been thinking about the good old days and the fun times we all had together doing the different activities here on the rez. O ne is playing basketball and co m p etin g against th e o th er tribes. Two is hardball town team baseball and th e fun we had p lay in g th e U m a tilla an d Yakama N ations in a hom e and hom e exchange. T he third item was talking about form ing a W arm Springs H all o f Fam e, w here we can recognize our people for there effo rts in d ifferen t activities over the years. Please join me in getting these ideas turned to reality in the coming days. First, I would like to get a 60- year and older basketball team form ed so we can play in some games this coming season and 2010. It w ould be fun to go play some games with the neighbor ing tribes and see some o f the old timers there. I have been asked to see if we have enough interest here to get this accom plished. We can see how many play ers we can gather and go from there. Please let me know your interest by calling me at hom e (553-1756) o r at w o rk (553- 3559). S econd, I w as called and asked to see if W arm Springs could form a hardball baseball team to do a hom e and hom e series w ith U m a tilla an d Yakama. A t one time I was also -asked if we could get a team together to venture to the Chehalis res ervation in Oakville, Wash. I said I w ould get out a no tice and see if there was enough interest This would be a men’s team 18-years and older. I f you are interested please call me at the above numbers listed- Sal Sahme and I are willing to coach and manage the group and go and have some; fun com peting in a game we enjoyed playing in our younger days. You might even get Sal to take a few swings ( as he hit the long foul ball m any o f tim e). L e t m e know, it could be a lot o f fun for the summer. T h ird , th e W arm Springs Tribal Council have some visi tors from the Chickasaw N ation (H o n o ra b le G o v e rn o r Bill A n o a tu b b y a n d Mr. S tan Speaks, Portland Area BIA Su perintendent) coming to visit at Pi-Ume-Sha time with regard to their Hall o f Fame. Warm Springs is interested in having a Hall o f Fame here and we are going to visit with these folks as to how their program works. I have had two meetings with a small group o f folks w ho have expressed interest to serve on a start up group. Please let me know again by calling the above referenced phone numbers and I will include you in the next meeting. We will m eet once for sure before these folks arrive and make sure we are ready to ask them some questions. They are on the Tribal Council agenda for June 26. We will have a lunch m eet ing as in the past so as to allow for those on the job that wish to participate.
