She received recognition o f this accomplishment last m onth in Reno, at the IHS national conference. Jackson received the IHS S pecial R e c o g n itio n o f Achievement 2009 Partner ship A ward, fo r “M aking Every Dollar Count.” She was chosen for the award from among 100 other IHS business office nominees from across Indian Country. Jackson has been the IHS business office manager at the Warm Springs Health and Wellness C enter for three years. She has w orked for IHS for ten years. “D eb o rah is a dynamic and progressive business of fice manager who motivates her staff with an upbeat man ner,” the IHS award state m ent says. The work o f Jackson and her six-person staff brought in more money in 2008 than IHS had originally targeted. “She is a top business office m anager w ho has w orked hard to successfully integrate the business office m odel into the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center.” In 2008 Jackson and her staff played a key role in sign ing up tribal members for the O regon Health Plan lottery, which resulted in 450 local Employee Appreciation Day May 27 Tribal Employee Recognition Day is scheduled for W ednes day, May 27 at the ball fields behind the community center. It was business as usual, which did a lot for office morale. Jackson gives great credit to her staff for thé accom plish m ents o f the business office. H er sta ff is cro ss-train ed to various duties, reducing tasks that become dependent on a particular person. “I f she sees a trend, she makes appointments to meet with that department to show the employees how to do the same work m ore effectively, thus breaking the cycle o f habit,” the award statements says. “All o f this translated into the recovery o f more money in 2008 than had been tar geted.” The Institute for Indian Es tate P lanning and P ro b ate is again partnering with the C on fe d e ra te d T rib es o f W arm Springs to offer estate planning and will writing services to com munity members o f the Warm Springs Reservation. T h is free serv ice w ill be available through the summer. This is the third year in a row that the estate planning service will be provided free on the res ervation. As in previous years, a sec ond-year law student will be lo cated in the comm unity for a 10-week period. T he stu d ent will be the primary service pro vider. T his year’s overall pro ject inclu d es tw elve second-year law students w ho will undergo an intensive w eek o f special training before they are located on various reserv atio n s and In d ia n co m m u n itie s in th e N orthw est. Native market this weekend Tractor safety training and ATV certification D o you know a youth w ho is looking for sum m er em ploy ment? Be aware that farm ers and ranchers who employee minors less than 18 years o f age are required to hire those w ho have completed and passed a tractor safety training program. A three-day Central Oregon Farm and Tractor Safety Train ing and Certification Course will be' offered Monday-Wednesday, June 15-17. T he course, sponso red by the O reg o n State U niversity E xtension Service, will be at th e D esch u tes C ounty F a ir grounds and E xpo C enter in R edm ond. Training will include class room w ork as well as hands-on experience w ith a variety o f tractors and implements. Safety on all-terrain vehicles May 21, 20 09 (ATV) will also be covered. This class is open to those who will be 14 to 17 years o f age during the upcoming agri cultural season. Registration fee for tractor safety training is $50. For an additional $20, youth can also be ATV certified to ride on public lands. Those wanting ATV certifi cation m ust bring an “appropri ately sized” ATV. The name o f the legal extern to be stationed at Warm Springs this sumrher is Michelle Watch man. She is a law student from the Lewis and Clark School o f Law. Watchman will arrive in the Warm Springs community after M em orial D ay w eekend, and will be available to provide ser vices for ten weeks, through the end o f July. W atchman will have office space in the Family Resource Center. Comprehensive estate planning and will writing services will be provided. U nlike fo rm e r B ureau o f Indian Affairs wills that only covered Indian trust assets (land and accounts), the legal extems will prepare wills that cover all assets owned by an individual, including tru st and n o n -tru st assets. However, even if you do not own any trust land or trust ac counts, you are eligible for these estate planning and will writing services.
