Players to thank for playing: for Friday C lin t S m ith, P earl an d Levi By Selena Boise Management Successor W ith May upon us we have had R oot Feast, and now se nior citizens will look forw ard to th e annual H onor Seniors Day Spilyay event. Speaks T h e th em e fo r this year is “Mardi Gras Fun Day.” W hich is pretty much what they have, a fun day. D uring previous years that I attended, I saw a lot o f laugh ter, a good thing for senior citi zens to have. As I am told, laughter is good medicine. The annual event came from an idea to gather senior citizens together for a fun day to honor them, let them laugh and have a good time together. So, if you happen to have a free m om ent to stop and see w hat this day does for the se nior citizens you should stop in at the Agency Longhouse. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the children’s powwow is at 10 a.m. O ther entertainment will fol low for a fun-filled day. Correction A false letter o f apol ogy was published in the previous edition o f the Spilyay Tymoo. The letter said it w as . fro m Cassandra B. Wolfe and Kaylyn Wolfe, which was false, an d th e Spilyay apologizes for printing it. Please n o te th a t the Spilyay can no longer pub lish apology letters that are n o t initialed by the tribal court. Thank you. Correction A probate notice in the previous paper, regarding atw ai V enus S tro n g , w ro n g ly liste d A a ro n Strong as being deceased. We apologize and regret this error. Sincerely, Pat Allen, Lynn Davis, Pearl Vanpelt and Del Frint. was taught besides other unwrit ten laws by many older Sherars fisherm n from the 1960s and ‘70s. I am a night fisherman and the Tribal Council needs to un derstand that when the m oon light hits the water, the fishing dies, then there is no guarantee that the water will still be high enough to catch the fish. You all need to learn m ore from myself and some o f the Sherars fishermen. The fishermen know that our Natural Resource, the Fish and Wildlife Committees and Tribal Council don’t favor the plight o f our first food. T he fisher m en w ant a voice in the deci sion-making process. The fishermen don’t like the fact that the local hatchery now heavily dictates the final o u t come, which is “will the Sherars fishermen be allowed to fish this year?” It seems to repeat itself, year after year. It is n o t the fault o f the fish erm en that there isn’t the right num ber so they can fish. All the fisherm en w ant to do is pursue the life we used to do uninhibited. Em pty nets means empty stomachs. Thank you. Terry Courtney Jr. Sherars fishing Root Feast I just read the regulation that o u tlin e s sa lm o n fish in g at Sherars and it is very upsetting. As tribal river people, the fish ing should n o t be stopped. We, fisherm en, d o n ’t w ant anyone w ho h asn ’t fished at Sherars in the last 10 years to make final decisions in our be half. The fisherm en need to be h eard . T h ey all k n ow m o re about the fish runs in our area than anyone else. Please remember, the fisher m en don’t get unemployment, assistance, or buyouts. There are no jobs that they get access to, if any becom e available. T he losses o f their driving privileges, no monies to buy good decent vehicles. Nothing! According to our Treaty o f 1855, we reserved certain rights. The salmon is sacred, it is our people’s first food. For centu ries, the people and the salmon cam e to g e th e r every spring. Now, our leaders buckle under th e p ressu re th a t the E u ro - Americans have thrust upon us. In 1995, that Tribal Council listened to the fishermen and let us fish. All the rules that the fisher m en see year a fte r year are never changed. We are treated like children in school. We do have dignity, we have feelings. Some o f us fish for the El ders, and some aren’t our im mediate family. This is w hat I To one and all, I ap o lo g iz e p u b lic ly to Geraldine Jim for calling P ro tocol dance night before R oot Feast. My five Colville baby sing ers need me for their help in the Chinook Walk— had to call re lease dance. Thank you Richard for your support. You are a good elder. Thank you all for accepting my homeless family to the R oot Feast. They enjoyed it. N o anger here b u t I ’m glad I can sing any ole time. T h a n k y o u all fo r o p e n hearts. My homeless family re ally enjoyed R o o t F east and looking around on our rez. Motherhood W hen G od created m other hood, he did it with delight. It had to cover many things, and everything just right. She h ad to have a loving heart, and also very strong.
