By S u z i M a c y Fire Prevention Tech The objective of defen sible space is to reduce the wildfire threat to a home by changing the characteristics o f the adjacent vegetation. Defensible space practices include: Increasing the moisture content o f the vegetation. Decreasing the amount o f flammable vegetation. Shortening plant height. Altering the arrangement of plants. Removal: This technique in volves the elimination o f the entire plant or tree from the site. Examples of removal are cut ting down a dead tree or cutting out a flammable shrub. Reduction: The removal of plant parts, such as branches or leaves, is considered reduction. O ther examples o f reduction are pruning dead wood from a shrub, removing low branches and mowing dried grasses also known as removing ladder fu els. Replacement: Substituting hazardous vegetation for less flammable plants. Removal of a dense stand o f flam mable shrubs and planting an irrigated, well-maintained flowerbed is an example of replacement. Don’t want to mow lawns or water flowers? N o t to worry. I f you don’t want the extra work of a garden or a lawn, you can still have your defensible space. Use rock or gravel to create your defen sible space. Get creative.
