The contest is in honor of National Native American In dian Heritage Month, which is this month. The competition celebrates the values, and documents the successes of the Native Ameri can people. The competition is open to American Indian and Alaska Native students in grades pre kindergarten through twelfth grade. Honoring the G o o d in O ur People Through the com petition, Education and ROWDI (Recog nizing O u r W onderful and Dedicated Indians) seek to in spire students to explore the connection between themselves and their Native heritage. Entries for the 2008 essay and poster competition should relate to the theme: “Honoring the G ood in Our People.” Essay writers can focus on education, language, culture and tradition to reflect the impor tance o f understanding their heritage. Submissions will be judged anonymously in six grade levels. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each cat egory. Classrooms who submit as a classroom will also be ehgible to win books and art supplies. Contest categories are as fol lows: Pre-kindergarten poster. F irst- and secon d -g rad e poster. T h ird - and fo u rth -g rad e poster or essay. Fifth- and sixth-grade poster or essay. Seventh- and eighth-grade poster or essay. High school (grades 9-12) poster or essay. P oster guidelines: Submission will be on sheet o f construction paper (9”x l2 ” or 12”x l8 ”). Submissions will use one o f the following mediums: ink, pencil, or paint (poster, acrylic or finger). Official entry forms will ac company the submission. They will be assigned a number to keep the artist anonymous. Submitted artwork will not be returned to the artist. The program supports the work of Native American art ists in increasing knowledge, understanding and appreciation fo r co n tem p o rary N ative American arts. Applications for the grants are due Jàn. 15,2009. The grants come from the Ex hibitions and Publications Pro gram for Native arts institutions and the Expressive Arts Pro gram for new works by Native artists. Awards will be an nounced March 15, 2009. “The National Museum o f the American Indian considers the recognition of living artists o f the Western Hemisphere to be of the utmost importance,” said museum director Kevin G over, w ho is Pawnee and Comanche. “T hese aw ards will strengthen scholarship and cre ate opportunities for new and innovative work.” Last year 13 awards totaling $145,000 were given. The crite ria are based on the merit o f the project and its ability to reach a diverse audience.
