(Listed in order from left to right). This year, even though I am a Republican, I am voting for Mike Ahern, Dem ocrat for state representative. Mike A hern will go to Salem and champion the education and job training needs o f our region and will fight for the needs o f our young people. Mike has two ch ild ren in college no w and knows first hand w hat a burden higher education has becom e for all o f our families. Mike has shown his commit m en t to o u r elem entary and high schools, and has volu n te e re d as a m e m b e r o f o u r school district budget com m it tee, so he really knows the is sues facing our schools, parents, children and teachers. Because o f this, the Ameri can Podiatrie Medical Associa tion (APMA) is launching a na- tional campaign tided “elect to save your feet.” This campaign, which is run d u rin g D ia b e te s A w areness M onth in N ovem ber, aims to educate th e public ab o u t the im portance o f seeing a podia trist regularly to prevent diabetic lower limb amputations. “G etting your feet examined by a physician during an annual checkup is one o f the easiest ways to prevent m ost foot com pEcations related to diabetes,” said Dr. Ross Taubman, presi dent o f the APMA. “T he rate o f amputation for those w ith diabetes is 10 times higher than those w ithout the disease,” said Taubman. “Being vigüant in your personal foot care and including your podia trist in your diabetes manage m ent team can save b oth your limbs and your Efe.” Every 30 seconds, a low er limb is lost to diabetes som e where in the world. T hose with diabetes are'm ore prone to de velop foot infections, caEed foot ulcers, which can quickly result in amputation. Preventing am putation means knowing aE o f the main warning signs. O ther com m on diabetes warning signs in the feet besides ulcers include: a tingfing, burning o r loss o f feeEng in the feet; redness o f the foot; a change in the shape o f the feet (toes, arch or ankle); lo ss o f h a ir, sk in a n d nail changes; cuts and scrapes that are slow to heal.
