Spilygy Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon July 17, 2008 Page 9 Births Howlak Tichum Alvis Willington Smith Sr. (Kam iaux), Jan. 3, 1920 - June 13, 2008 Alvis W. Smith Sr. who was recently residing at Fort Belknap Montana, went to be with the Lord on June 13, 2008 due to natural causes. He was born January 3,1920 at D ry H ollow Ranch in Warm Springs, Oregon. Alvis received his educa tion studying under a coal oil lantern at Dry Hollow Ranch where he grew up. In 1938 Alvis enlisted in the United States Army and was sta tioned at Fort Knox, Ken tucky Upon successfully com pleting the service he met Ramona R. Whiz. From this marriage Alvis and Ramona w ere b lessed w ith four daughters and seven sons. Alvis was a* logger and worked in the timber busi ness in Tulalip, Washington for numerous years. He and his family relocated to Warm Springs, where he was a car penter and wood worker. Alvis built many homes, recreatio n al centers and tribal business buildings in the Warm Springs Reserva tio n area. H e continued working as a logger at the Warm Springs Mill. He was a dedicated Native American fisherman at the Celilo Falls, Klickitat Falls, and the Co lu m b ia River. H e was a saddle bronc rider, and was self-em ployed as a cattle rancher. Alvis broke an un ac co u n ted n u m b er o f horses, and was also a dedi cated worker for his parents and sister with their cattle ranch. Alvis began the Warm Springs Boxing Team in the early 1950’s and his first boxer was Kanim W Smith Sr. Alvis advocated, for his boxing team, and people would view his box ing team competing on live tele vision. He took numerous boxers to compete in the Golden Gloves. One o f his boxers, Kennedy Smith, won 14 Golden Gloves and three Jackets. Alvis coordinated live band dances and contests for the Warm Springs people. He was always active in creating sports and activities for the people. Alvis was an advocate of the Pi- Ume-Sha Powwow activities. He helped an unaccounted number o f his people when they asked him for help, he wouldn’t turn anyone away. . Alvis was a very, very proud Wasco man and a strong behever o f the Shaker Church. He in vited all denominations into his home and into his heart and he was extremely spiritual. Alvis and his children would Wasco D ance periodically at the Kah’Nee’Ta Lodge for the guest and salmon bakes. Alvis was preceded in death by his parents Wesley and Annie (Jackson) Smith, his late wife R am ona R. (Whiz) Smith, his daughter Zelma L. Smith, a grandson Anthony (Tony) Stacona and his brother in-law Austin Bill Whiz. Alvis is survived by his children Marie Jody) Calica and family, Kanim (Leona) Smith Sr. and family, Alvis (Sissy) Smith Jr. and Family, Bobby (Smith) Eagle Heart and family, A ustin (Lois) Smith Sr. and family, Leta Smith and Family, Vernon Sm ith Sr. and family, Kennedy (Edna) Smith and family all o f Warm Springs; Alyssia Meanus and family o f W arm Springs; M ona (Billy) Cochran and family of Fort Belknap Montana, Jo Jo Smith and family o f Bend. Alvis is survived by 89 grand children, great grandchildren and great-great grandchil dren, a sister Zelma L. Smith o f Dry Hollow, and a dear friend, Gladys Thompson. Alvis had three step chil dren from his relationship w ith Shirley C hem em a- Smith. Additionally, Grade, Wendy, Dotti, and Victor are step-children from the late Audrey George. Alvis loved his grandchildren dearly and they were always the stars and delight of his eye. Alvis’ m agnetic personality and spirituality will be greatly missed by his family, friends and relatives.
