B ecause o f the changes, it is im portant for tribal m em bers to have a will. “T he basic reason why you would w ant to write a will is to make sure your property is go ing to w ho you w ant it to go to,” said Leah Myers, a law student at the University o f O regon. In some instances, the tribe may have an option to purchase a p art o f the property. O n e goal o f the American Indian R eform A ct was to re duce the fractional ownerships in p ro p erties w ithin reserv a tions. Toward this goal, the tribe can purchase a fractional ow n ership o f a decedent’s estate in the absence o f a will. I f a person wishes to leave his or her estate to specific heirs, it is im portant to have a written will, said Myers. She will help any tribal mem ber write a will, and the service is free o f charge. Myers will be in W arm Springs until August. H er office is at the Family Re source Center. Health and Wellness hosts Well Women’s Clinic T h e W arm Springs H ealth and Wellness C enter now has a Well Women’s clinic on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. This is a nurse-run clinic and is set up to do cervical cancer screening (pap smears), sexually tr a n s m itte d d ise a se exam s, b re a s t exam s, re fe rra ls fo r m am m ogram s and im m uniza tions. T he clinic is held in Pod A in Comm unity Health. T he clinic has three Regis tered Nurses, Jodi Fickett, PH N , D enise Swift, R N and K atie Russell, RN that have had the special training to perform the exam s., This training was provided by the Mayo Clinic. I f you are n o t eligible to have m am mograms paid for by the tribe’s Managed Care program, we can now send you to Madras M edical G ro u p fo r a b reast exam and they will refer you for a mam m ogram — all at no cost to you. T hrough our Well W omen’s program , we can help you ac cess that system. In addition, the nurses can help you with family planning services, b u t they are currendy limited to D epo Provera injec tions. Remem ber that this clinic is for “well w om en exams,” so if you are having problems that are causing you pain or discomfort, you need to see your regular pro vider at the clinic.
