E Coosh EEWA: The W3y it is P^ge 4 Spiiyay Tymoo May 22, 2008 Letters to the Editor Youth tourney T he W arm Springs Cougars Youth Organization held its 16th Annual All Indian High School Boys and Girls Basketball Tour nam ent on April 4,5 and 6,2008 at the W arm Springs E lem en tary School gym and the Com munity Center. Much planning takes place for an event coordinator to make it as successful as possible. The tour nam ent in general ran close to $7,000 to conduct this year. In cluding in that awards, referees, elementary school gym rental, and insurance for the event. I, as the director o f the event, attest to the hard work o f my volunteers to see this through. T he recru itm en t o f team s representing their tribal nations to come and participate is the easy part, as years past successes encourage teams to return. The recruitm ent o f a referee staff, concession needs, and the list o f volunteers and potential sponsors is the task that requires a huge p a rt o f the directo r’s time. These aspects once com plete and on line, can make the tournament successful. So at this time, I w ant to thank all that have given to this event, whether as a volunteer or sponsor. I have been blessed working with the Native people. It has helped me under stand some o f the traditions o f my ow n p eo p le, by w orking here. I will miss everyone; this has been my life for the last 12 years. I would like to thank Lt. Avex Miller, Mariam Tias, my H i everyone. As m ost o f you know, I com peted in the State o f O r egon N ational History Day C om petition in April. My project placed Fourth. I am now eligible to com pete in the N ational History Day Competition. Nationals are being held at the Univer sity o f Maryland in College Park, M aryland from June 15-19, 2008. We will be fundraising to help with the costs associated w ith this trip. While in the D C area, I will be able to go on tours w ith the H istory Day Association and visit the N ational Monuments. I am really e x c ite d a b o u t th is amazing opportunity. I f I am able to com pete in my high school years, I may be able to receive scholarships. I am so happy th a t my m om is going to go w ith me as my chaperone. We will be flying o u t o f P o rtlan d on June 14th and coming back on June 20th.
